You decide what positive birth means to you.

If you say your birth was positive, it was.

For most women, that positive feeling usually comes from feeling they were at the centre of the decision making, or that, if another person took the reins, they handed over their power willingly.

Learn how to change your mindset and take charge of your choices as you approach birth, with the bestselling Positive Birth Book. Available from Amazon and all good book sellers. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Positive-Birth-Book-Bestselling-Pregnancy/dp/1780667655/

Last week I spent a lovely few days in the Lake District swimming and walking.
This was my time to step off the wheel of the day to day busyness of life, my time to decompress.

We all need time to recharge, reset and recalibrate and that can mean different things to different people.

Spending time in nature
A pj day
Exercise
Time with family
Meditation
Getting lost in a good book
Taking a long bath
Enjoying a cup of coffee on your own
Doing a simple breathing exercise

See if you can take a few minutes today just for you

I absolutely LOVE this quote by Professor Roberto Caldeyro Barcia, past president of the international federation of obstetricians and gynaecologists.

Research has shown that a woman has an easier labour, fewer epidurals and less risk of having a caesarean section if she is able to move around and adopt positions in which she feels comfortable (Lawrence A et Al., 2013)

You won’t know until you’re experiencing labour what position will feel right for you.

One thing you should know is that it is your choice.

Check out this lovely downloadable poster of positions from the RCM.
Give it a go, it’ll be worth it.

During a hypnobirthing workshop we discuss some of the things that you might come up against during your labour and give you and your birth partner the confidence to be able to assert what your preferences are.

I always recommend this book by .hill to my hypnobirthing clients. I say read it, get angry and then decide how you’d like to experience birth. A great read for birth partners and also for those who are not expecting. It really does create a shift in how we think about birth

Wow! Just been told that this is on promo for 99p on Amazon Kindle. Seriously! This includes accompanying MP3 downloads ( link in bio) This is such a bargain. Read this in the last few weeks of pregnancy so that you are prepared for the thoughts and feelings aspect of becoming a new parent rather than it taking you by surprise. Learn practical tools while you can so you can draw on the quickly when you need them most. ❤️"This is a must for pregnant couples to read in preparation for parenthood. It’s a comforting and calming book that supports parents in their journey for the first year. Loved reading it!" "

❤️"Fantastic! If you are expecting a baby or are a new mum, be it your 1st, 2nd, 5th baby this book is for you. You don't have to have subscribed to hypnobirthing or mindfulness to benefit from the gentle guidance as you navigate your first days, weeks and months as a new mum. I love the stories from other mums, their honest experiences are real and comforting. I wondered if it was going to be a parenting manual - nah, its for mums, about motherhood. It has loads of easy excercises to support your up and down days. Parenting is hard and wonderful. This book steadies you as you step through it all with amazing empathy. It's not a manual or a guide, its a companion. I even get to listen to the author Sophie guide me with audios which you can download."

Here's another fantastic birth story, that I've been given permission to share, from Samantha, a client with her first baby. Yes, you absolutely can have an amazing experience with your first baby. 🥰

"I had seen some friends post about hypnobirthing before even getting pregnant. I attended a workshop with my husband at 30 weeks pregnant and felt very calm and assured that my body was designed to birth my baby and that it could be a lovely experience. I practiced my affirmations, relaxation using 321 relax and long visualisation track throughout the rest of my pregnancy. I found visualising waves and the sea worked really well for me. I even used them during Braxton Hicks and one episode of false labour!
I woke up boxing day morning at 1.40am with some cramps but went back to bed. 5am they were more regular, every 15 mins so I lit candles, used my birthing ball and walked around lots while watching TV, using my relaxation breathing. By 830am they were more intense and regular so ran a bath and let husband know. I spent a couple of hours in the bath rocking side to side, imagining my cervix dilating and taking each contraction as it came.
I had a show and contractions were at least 3 in 10mins but not lasting longer than 40 seconds so hospital advised likely early labour, to take paracetomal and remain at home. Over the next hour I had longer more intense contractions but I remained in the bath rocking and breathing. We had my 40 week check at 1130am at hospital so husband was trying to get me ready for that but I felt like I needed a poo and was making an occasional deep noise during my contractions with some bleeding which I was aware happened in active labour when close to pushing but felt it was too soon for that as it had only been a few hours and the pain was still manageable.
I didn’t talk on the way or much when we arrived at the hospital, I just focused on each contraction breathing and counting backwards from 30 2-3 times. I got taken straight to the birth centre, my husband told them my birth plan- waterbirth with hypnobirthing and minimal intervention. They examined me and at 12.05 I was 9.5cm!
Waters broke while the bath was running and I was on my back pushing. I ended up staying on the bed in then end as foetal heart rate dropped. I used the short breaths down throughout the pushing stage and after a 15min 2nd stage of labour baby girl Maya was born at 12.45!! my husband cut the cord and we had skin to skin for over an hour. The power of the mind and body made it such a magical experience."

My latest blog post.

If you want to know what mindful hypnobirthing is or have any preconceptions about hypnobirthing this will be worth a read.
Please feel free to share

Hypnobirthing is not solely about having an undisturbed birth at home. It’s about letting women/couples know that they have choices.

I have been given permission to share this fantastic hypnobirth story from a couple who attended a Mindful hypnobirthing class with me last year 🥰...

Just to let you know that we welcomed baby Leo into the world last week.... 10 days late and 10lbs exactly! After our session with you in October and reading “give birth like a feminist” we decided to go for a home birth and what an excellent decision that was!

My waters went just before midnight and Leo arrived in the pool at 3.45am. Unbeknown to us he was back to back and due to his size the midwives couldn’t believe I delivered him all by myself with just entonox. Chris kept me focussed that whole time using the hypnobirthing techniques we learnt, a completely different experience from last time. The midwives left us to birth undisturbed, I pushed when I felt I needed to and I didn’t even need stitches!

We’re happy for you to share our birth story. I really want more women to believe in their bodies. At 10 days “late” I was not far from the threat of induction which I found incredibly stressful and felt like I was going to be pressured into things I didn’t want. Thanks to our research and your advice we had a much better idea of how to deal with this. Knowledge is definitely power, but it feels wrong that you have to know where to look and who to ask at such a vulnerable time in your life.

Thank you so much for all your advice, we are so pleased that we chose a home birth. It was a really empowering experience for both of us.
