Performing CPR involves a specific cycle of chest compressions and rescue breaths to keep blood and oxygen circulating. Here is the standard process for the 30:2 ratio:
1. Position your hands: Place the heel of one hand in the center of the person's chest and the other hand on top, interlacing your fingers.
2. Give 30 compressions: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Aim for a depth of about 2 inches (5-6 cm) and a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to recoil completely between pushes.
3. Open the airway: After 30 compressions, tilt the person's head back slightly and lift the chin to open the airway.
4. Give 2 rescue breaths: Pinch the nose shut, take a normal breath, and make a complete seal over their mouth with yours. Blow for about one second to make the chest rise. Repeat for a second breath.
5. Repeat the cycle: Continue the cycle of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths until professional medical help arrives or an AED is ready for use.
