⚠️ Keysafe Safety Advice – Please Read & Share ⚠️
We’ve seen a significant rise in homes across Charnwood being targeted by offenders who are smashing key safes from exterior walls and then using the key to enter the property.
This is extremely distressing for residents, especially as many of those targeted are vulnerable people or homes visited regularly by carers.
To help keep you and your loved ones safe, please take a moment to check your keysafe and follow the guidance below:
🔐 Where NOT to Put a Keysafe
• ❌ Right beside the front door – this is the first place offenders check.
• ❌ Eye-level or clearly visible from the street.
• ❌ Near doorbells, intercoms, or utility meters – these are predictable spots.
• ❌ Directly on weak brickwork or old mortar, which can be easily forced off.
🔐 Safer Places to Position a Keysafe
• ✔️ Out of sight, behind objects like bins, shrubs, or fencing (without making access awkward for carers).
• ✔️ Higher or lower than eye-level, making it less obvious.
• ✔️ Fixed to strong, solid brickwork using the correct fixings.
• ✔️ Inside a locked porch or rear area if accessible to those who need it.
• ✔️ Consider internal keysafe options where appropriate (carers gain access through a coded door/permit system).
🛡️ Extra Tips to Keep Your Property Safe
• 🔄 Change your keysafe code regularly, especially if many people know it.
• 👀 Make sure the code numbers are mixed up fully after every use.
• 🔧 Use a police approved, Secured by Design keysafe model where possible.
• 📝 Only share the code with trusted professionals.
• 🚪 Ensure all other doors and windows remain secure, even if you rely on carers accessing the property.
✅ Some Good News ✅
In one recent case, an offender who forced entry after removing a keysafe left blood at the scene. This crucial evidence allowed officers to identify and arrest him, and he is now in custody.
