Good morning everyone šŸ¤—

Yesterday I posted a ā€˜reel’ in Facebook and Instagram showing modifications for some kneeling exercises … the message being that if you can’t kneel , you can still do Pilates.

Tying in with my passion to help everyone keep moving, and to live active lives, I have always offered alternative positions and modifications in my classes, because I always want everyone to move in the best way for them.

In the JTP Zone members website there is a tutorial showing modifications and alternative techniques for some exercises. In all JTP classes there are always options, ALWAYS.

The reason I do this is because Pilates should meet you where you are, so if your knees are complaining, don’t let that stop you from getting started, we can find your version.

Happy Friday 🧔🧔🧔

I am feeling very grateful today as I realise I am an ageing Pilates teacher, and have been teaching for 25+ years.

What do I mean by this?

Well as I have been ageing my JTP family have been ageing with me… and I’m grateful because most of the people who started with me are still attending classes, either online, in person or both.

So I’ve seen people increase in years, but not decrease what they do.

- Two of the JTP family both in late 70s have recently taken up tap dancing

- One lady approaching her 80s is still playing tennis and heads to Wimbledon every year

- One of the family just coming up to her 60th, has just competed in her 3rd triathlon

- Regularly beating their grandchildren running around the garden … a 72 year old

I might work with an ageing population but every day I see the difference between people who actively pursue movement and those who don’t.

We may have to modify, we may not do exactly what we were doing in our 20s, but we are doing it, not talking about it, but actually doing it, and I believe that Pilates plays a big part in this.

The principles of Pilates are absolutely appropriate to living a full and active life. Concentration, control, centering, precision, flowing movement, breathing … perfect combination of mind and body. All have an impact, and we can’t change the number of years that pass, but Pilates can help us to continue to perform everyday tasks, and beyond.

This is why I am grateful … and you can start to move more today.

See you in class 🧔🧔🧔

Good morning, happy Monday šŸ¤—

Did you know that moving the body helps us to live longer?

We are living longer, listening to radio 4 last week interviewing a group of 100 years plus sounded amazing. But it also made me realise that living longer isn’t necessarily about how many years we reach.

There are many physical processes of ageing which is a natural part of the circle of life. But it is possible to work on our physical wellbeing to slow it down.

We can work on flexibility around the joints, we can make sure we stretch, we can work on our strength and bones density by choosing exercise to help with this, and the more we keep our bodies moving the bigger the benefits.

In the words of Age UK:

ā€˜Physical activity is one of the most effective ways of positively influencing our health. Regular exercise can lower our risk of getting serious conditions, such as stroke, heart disease and certain cancers. It can add years to our lives, but most importantly, it keeps us happy and helps us maintain our independence.’

So let’s keep moving together 🧔🧔🧔

Happy Sunday everyone šŸ¤—

Just a little reminder of what is happening in the JTP world this week.

It’s a summer break for all Face to Face classes now until 4th August.

However, don’t miss out on your Pilates practice … online continues as usual this week, with lots of recordings to check in with as well.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend … I’m heading back to my painting and decorating 😘

This week my son sent me a video of my youngest granddaughter taking her first wobbly steps, and it reminded me — we’re all taking first steps in life, all the time.

At this time of year I am thinking about our first steps into a new season of classes, which all starts in September.

For some it will mean the first steps back into class after a break.

Or the first steps into introducing Pilates changing how we move, think or feel.

But like my granddaughter, we don’t have to wait until we’re ā€œreadyā€ — sometimes we just need to begin.

In this week’s newsletter, I’m talking about how powerful those small first steps can be — in movement, in mindset, in life 🧔

It will land in your inbox tomorrow so you will be able to have a read, a little reflect, and maybe… take a step of your own.

Maybe you haven’t subscribed yet to my newsletter … so here’s a chance to take a ā€˜first step’ it’s free and it’s weekly … https://janethomaspilates.co.uk/newsletter

What was then… what is now.
In this weekend’s newsletter Your Whole Self was reflecting on how we change over time—not just our bodies, but our habits, needs, dreams.

Years ago, after my knee surgery, I had to let go of running marathons and find new ways to move and feel good. It wasn’t easy. But it taught me that it’s OK to grow beyond what used to work.

If you have something which you are struggling to let go of, think of it as making space for something new and something that will suit where you are here and now 🧔🧔🧔
