Relative energy deficiency in sport …

REDs is a multi system condition that can show up in many ways in active people

Low energy availability (LEA) is at the centre but factors such as physical and mental stress can play a role

A common myth is it only affects female athletes but it can affect anyone including males

Remember just because someone looks ‘healthy’ or performs well it doesn’t mean they aren’t in low LEA

Bone stress should always raise suspicion. Trabecular bone is more metabolic so low energy impairs bone formation and raises injury risk

🫡 REDs awareness matters. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments

Clinician GREEN flags

✅ If you’re considering physio or have a question mark over your current clinician, this one’s for you

There is a lot of dishonest and outdated clinicians out there but equally plenty of GREAT ones too

With a good clinician, you will walk out feeling heard, with a clear and positive path forward

🚩If you leave the session without an end-goal or reliant on ‘magic hands’ and gadgets, they’re probably not the one

This post applies to all MSK clinicians: physios, chiropractors and osteopaths. We should all be on the same page!

Tell me your green flags in clinicians ⤵️

Are you sure it’s SCIATICA?

⚡️Sciatica is no joke. When present it can be severe and life altering for people

However, true sciatica is actually rare, accounting for just 3-5% of back pain

Leg pain with back pain is common (~60%) so it’s understandable that many people assume it’s sciatica

It can often be somatic referred pain or a separate/co-existing issue such as the hip or knee

✅ A good clinician can identify the key sciatica features, make a clinical diagnosis and guide the right next steps

Are you sure you need a scan?

🩻 Scans (x-ray, MRI etc) are often seen as the ‘answer’ to pain but the truth is they usually aren’t

A scan shows structure, not pain. These changes on scans don’t always match how you feel

This isn’t an anti-scan post as they can be very helpful when used for the right reasons and explained properly

Problems arise when results are given without context - when you’re shown results in black and white, or worse, left to figure them out on your own

🫡 When good physios say no to a scan, they’re not blocking you, being stubborn or cutting costs, they’re focusing on what really matters: your recovery
