Anxious patterns are unhelpful, biased ways of thinking: ‘If I suffer with anxiety, I’m weak’ or ‘If I make a mistake I will lose my job’.

CBT therapy starts with identifying these patterns and changing them so that the anxiety can subside.

Changing thoughts and beliefs from unhelpful to helpful, allows us to unlearn anxiety by weakening neural pathways associated with it and strengthening the helpful ones which we create.

Our minds and bodies are connected and affect each other greatly, so this year make it your priority to look after your emotional wellbeing, just as you would look after your physical wellbeing.

If you feel anxious, depressed, angry, hurt, guilt, shame or jealousy, listen to your thoughts to find out what’s bothering you.

Work on these to reduce the intensity of your feelings, or if these feelings persist and interfere with your life, give CBT a try.

I find this article interesting as it looks at the link between insomnia and our circadian rhythm.

The circadian rhythm is our body’s internal clock, which tells us when to feel asleep and when to feel awake, which works well in good sleepers.

With insomnia, the body clock can be out of sink so we need to help it get back in sink to work smoothly, and improve sleep.

People with chronic insomnia show a delayed and weakened daily rhythm of mental activity, keeping the brain in a more alert, daytime-like state at night.

It is an invitation for us all to remain curious and scrutinise our current beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world in general, to see if they are still helpful and serving us well.

Hypervigilance is a state of alert, where we are constantly scanning for threats.

It is normal to be hypervigilant in threatening situations, however this becomes a feature of anxiety when we can’t swich off from it, even though we are in safe environments.

Being hypervigilant reinforces the feeling of threat and we continue to feel anxious even when there is no threat at all, and in doing so, we feel exhausted.

When we are feeling anxious our concentration can be affected, our minds can feel foggy or go blank, can’t start or finish tasks, read a line 4 times, or be unable to focus and get work done.

We can stay with the worry which affects our concentration, or we can work to reduce it.

Restructuring our thoughts and beliefs can help reduce anxiety, and improve concentration and focus, so that we can do our daily talks.
