10th of September 2025 is the World Su***de Prevention Day.

This is an event organised by The International Association for Su***de Prevention to promote commitment to taking action to prevent su***de.

Showing compassion towards people who struggle, offering a word of encouragement, showing empathy and trust reminds them that they are not alone with their pain, and in doing so can inspire hope and a sense that life is still worth living.

To manage our negative emotions means to take control over how we respond to situations instead of just reacting to them.

To react to a situation is to act impulsively and in doing so we can make decisions that may not be good for us.

We can learn to manage our negative emotions and this helps us to make helpful decisions under pressure, build stronger relationships with people, and mange challenging situations in a constructive way.

The concept of this phrase stems from psychological and spiritual perspectives on personal growth, suggesting that life presents the same challenges to us to teach us.

The unhelpful patterns will persist until we decide to break them by grasping their underlying message and developing skills to grow and do something different.

It may be that we need to learn about our values, or developing critical thinking and reflection, to see other angles to a situation or set up boundaries.

It has been observed that our beliefs about ourselves shape our reality.

For example, if we believe that we can lose weight, then we will make a plan and work at it, which is likely to lead us to losing weight.

By contrast, if we believe that losing weight is too difficult and we can’t do it, then we won’t work at it, which makes it unlikely that we will lose weight.

Our core beliefs are either healthy and work with us to achieve what we want, or they are unhealthy and work against us, preventing us from achieving what we want. If our core beliefs are unhealthy, we can work to change them, and to align them with our needs.

I find this article interesting as it looks at various aspects which can help reduce the feeling of anger.

In my experience, unhelpful core believes maintain the feeling of anger, which need to be identified and changed, for the anger to dissolve.

CBT therapy is effective at reducing anger, though restructuring systems of beliefs.

Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, explained that ‘to be master of oneself’ means to learn to manage our reactions, judgements and wishes and not be enslaved by them.

To be able to manage our thoughts, feelings and reactions leads us to a sense of inner peace and freedom, and this can be learned though CBT therapy.

When we chose to focus on helpful thoughts, emotions and behaviours, we are less likely to fall prey to heightened emotional turmoil and, unhelpful interactions.

Our minds can easily get confused, and it is our distorted thinking that cause us negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, or anger.

Reframing our unhelpful thoughts and systems of beliefs helps us to reduce these negative emotions.

Take charge of your mind, and steer it in the direction that works for you, and not against you.

Alcohol Awareness Week is running from 7-13 July 2025, an event organised by Alcohol Change UK, with the theme alcohol and work.

The event invites us all to reflect on alcohol and workplace, pointing out that stress
from long hours, high workloads or job insecurity can lead some employees to use alcohol as a coping mechanism.

The campaign encourages employers to provide mental health support and flexible working arrangements, to reduce reliance on alcohol for stress relief, and boost emotional and physical health. It also challenges the culture around drinking to remove pressure from people who chose to drink less, or not at all, by making it ok and providing non-alcoholic drinks.

Alcohol Awareness Week 2025 takes place from 7-13 July 2025. Sign up today to receive information and free digital resources to take part in the campaign.

Brene is inviting us to choose courage over comfort.

In her view, courage involves stepping into uncomfortable situations where we might fail, be judged, or feel exposed, like speaking up in a meeting, taking on a challenging project, or having a tough conversation.

She argues that embracing the uncomfortable and pushing ourselves to do what feels difficult, allows us to develop resilience, make meaningful changes in our lives and achieving fulfilment, as opposed to short-term ease and stagnation.

How we think affects how we behave.

For example, if I think ‘I’m not good at IT" this thought implies a fixed mindset, meaning that my ability in the area is static and unlikely to change, so I’m making no effort to learn and get better at it.

By contrast, if I think ‘I can improve my IT skills" this thought implies a flexible mindset, meaning that through effort and practice I can get better at it, and so I do.

It is down to us to adopt a mindset that allows us to grow and thrive.
