General Practice Assistant – Job Description
Role Overview
The General Practice Assistant (GPA) plays a vital role within the primary care team, providing high‑quality support to clinicians and helping ensure patients receive timely, safe, and effective care. This hybrid role combines clinical triage support, administrative assistance, and Health Care Assistant (HCA) duties, contributing to the smooth running of the practice and enhancing patient experience.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Triage Support
Assist GPs, ANPs, and other clinicians with the initial assessment of patient requests.
Support the triage process by gathering relevant clinical information, using agreed protocols.
Prioritise patient needs based on urgency and escalate concerns appropriately.
Provide patients with guidance on self‑care, signposting, and practice processes where appropriate.
Manage incoming clinical queries, ensuring accurate documentation and timely communication.
Health Care Assistant Duties
Perform routine clinical tasks such as:
Blood pressure monitoring
Pulse, temperature, and oxygen saturation checks
Height, weight, and BMI measurements
Urinalysis
ECGs
Phlebotomy (if trained)
Support chronic disease management reviews under clinician supervision.
Prepare and maintain clinical rooms, ensuring infection control standards are met.
Assist with NHS Health Checks and other screening programmes.
Administrative & Practice Support
Update and maintain accurate patient records on clinical systems.
Support clinicians with workflow tasks such as coding, document management, and follow‑up actions.
Liaise with patients, carers, and external services in a professional and compassionate manner.
Contribute to practice audits, quality improvement initiatives, and care navigation.
Skills & Experience
Experience working in a primary care or healthcare setting (preferred).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work calmly under pressure and manage competing priorities.
Competent with IT systems and clinical software (training provided).
Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, and data protection.
Willingness to undertake training for extended clinical skills.
