🐾 3 Amazing Facts About Guide Dogs 🐾

1️⃣ They practice “intelligent disobedience.”
Guide dogs are trained to disobey commands if it would put their handler in danger—like refusing to cross the street if a car is coming. 🚦🐕

2️⃣ Training takes over 2 years.
From puppy socialization to advanced obstacle navigation, only about 70% graduate as working guide dogs. 🎓✨

3️⃣ They change lives.
Beyond guiding, they provide independence, confidence, and companionship to people with vision loss. 💛👩‍🦯🐾

👁️✨ September is Healthy Aging Awareness Month! ✨👁️

Just like the rest of your body, your eyes change with age — but with the right care, you can protect your sight and enjoy clear vision for many years to come.

Here are our top tips for looking after your eyes as you get older:

🔹 Have regular eye exams – Conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration are far more common with age, and often develop without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Regular checks are the best protection.

🔹 Book an OCT Scan – At Louth Vision Centre, we use advanced OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scans to look beneath the surface of your eye. This powerful technology gives us a highly detailed 3D view of your retina, helping us detect problems before they affect your vision.

🔹 Eat well for your eyes – Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E, plus omega-3s, can reduce the risk of age-related eye conditions.

🔹 Shield from UV – Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement; they protect your eyes against long-term UV damage.

🔹 Support overall health – Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar lowers the risk of damage to the tiny blood vessels in your eyes.

🔹 Care for dry eyes – Age can reduce tear production, so staying hydrated and using artificial tears when needed can keep eyes comfortable.

💡 For ongoing care and peace of mind, our Eyeplan membership gives you unlimited eye care, advanced scans, exclusive discounts, and the reassurance that your vision is in safe hands.

📅 Book your eye test today and take the next step in protecting your vision.

👀 At Louth Vision Centre we want your child to begin the new school year with the clearest vision possible – book their eye test today!

Good vision is essential for a child’s learning 📚 confidence 🌟 and overall wellbeing ❤️ From clearly seeing the whiteboard to reading comfortably and joining in during sports ⚽ eyesight plays a huge role in their ability to learn and enjoy school life.

Around 1 in 5 school-aged children has an undetected vision problem and many children don’t even realise they are not seeing clearly. They may think everyone sees the same way. Common problems include short-sightedness (myopia) long-sightedness (hyperopia) astigmatism and lazy eye (amblyopia). Conditions like lazy eye are much easier to treat when detected early so the sooner it is picked up the better.

Signs that your child may have a vision problem can include squinting or closing one eye to see better frequent eye rubbing or blinking holding books or devices very close difficulty concentrating on schoolwork complaints of headaches or tired eyes and even struggling with sports or ball games. But remember not all vision issues have obvious symptoms which is why a sight test is the only reliable way to be sure.

Our children’s eye tests are friendly gentle and tailored to your child’s age. We use simple engaging charts and activities to assess their vision while also checking the overall health of their eyes. The test is completely painless ✅ and usually takes less than 30 minutes.

The summer holidays ☀️ are the perfect time to book before the rush of the new school term. Clear vision will help your child start September ready to learn focus and thrive.

Best of all it’s free — NHS-funded eye tests are available for all under-16s and under-19s in full-time education.

📅 Book your child’s appointment now at Louth Vision Centre 🌿 your trusted local eye care team.

🔵 August is Amblyopia Awareness Month

Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is the most common preventable cause of poor vision in children—and the earlier it’s caught, the better the outcome.

It occurs when one eye develops weaker vision than the other, often due to a squint, large difference in prescription, or other visual disruption. If untreated during the early years, it can result in permanent reduced vision in the affected eye.

🔍 Signs to watch for include:

One eye drifting or turning

Head tilting or frequent eye rubbing

Struggles with depth perception

Reading or screen issues

Seeming unaware of objects on one side

The tricky part is, many children won’t show clear symptoms—or won’t be able to explain what they’re experiencing.

At Louth Vision Centre, our expert optometrists offer child-friendly, thorough eye exams that can catch amblyopia early—when treatment is most effective.

🗓️ Book a test this August and support your child’s future vision during Amblyopia Awareness Month.
