Here’s something I’m noticing and learning and this may help someone else.
As you know, mindfulness is a big part of my life and it’s my go to tool. The whole aim of mindfulness is to anchor yourself in the present moment (with whatever means you choose: breathing, focus, attention, senses etc). Iv pretty much mastered the art of stopping the past coming to ruin my day. But I’m struggling with being at peace in the present moment whilst upset and unrest surrounds me in my present day.
It’s easier to control the thoughts from the past as I can centre myself and feel calm in the here and now, however with the events that in our lives now, it’s very much eating up my present which then fuels the anxious future thoughts. It’s exhausting! But this is how I’m adapting……
I used to be able to anchor myself in the present moment anywhere, sitting outside, being in nature, enjoying my surroundings. This currently doesn’t work. My here and now is too big. I can appreciate my surroundings and focus my breathing but it’s not enough. It’s still letting the anxious thoughts in. If you are finding this to, make it smaller. Make your present moment bubble teeny weeny. Bring your attention right in and focus on something small, real close. The pattern on your tea cup, the ring in your finger, the pattern on your clothing. I’m not sure if this in an official thing but for me it helps. The wider my attention wanders the harder it is for me to stay present. When I focus on just one tiny thing I feel as though my bubble of calm is smell and tight and that’s where I am finding my comfort. Some days I can do my normal mindfulness practices but some days I just have to bring it in tight.
Whatever you choose to do or how to do it, remember that mindfulness holds us in the present moment where we are safe, in control and calm for however long you choose to stay in that moment. Adaptation is key.
This may well resonate with others so it was worth a share.
Love and light
Steph
