Did you know Melissa can help you mentally process maths?
In the Uk, April 1st is the beginning of our new tax year. So if you are interested in improving your financial accounting this year...you might want to enlist some Melissa officinalis as an ally.
This extract is taken from my book about the plant. I mention "our Dave" who is David O Kennedy and his team at Newcastle University in the UK. My the time we get to this section of the book I have cited so much of his team's incredible work into how this and other plants affect psychology, especially for dementia, I felt we had become friends.
The passage reads:
DISS (Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation) tests a person’s cognitive load by giving the subject several things to think about at once, to see if that affects their ability to recall them.
In 2004, Kennedy and his team, or “our Dave” as I’ve now come to call him, subjected his next team of 18 hearty volunteers to a barrage of four things to think about. This time the tests were done twice, again with a 7 day washout period between. Again, a standardised extract, not an essential oil, and taken orally at 300mg and 600mg.
At 600mg, the Melissa reduced the negative mood caused by the barrage of questions of the DISS. The Bond Lade scale show significantly increased self-reporting of feeling calm and reduced levels of being alert. So, that sounds sleepy to me, but at the reduced amount – the 300mg, there was some really exciting stuff going on with the mathematic processing.
Not only were subjects calculating faster, but also their results were just as accurate as they had been before they took the lemon balm. So, their brains were just as on the ball as they had been, even though any hyper-vigilance had gone, and they felt calmer overall. (32)"
I have found that drinking Melissa tea, while using Melissa essential oil on an aromapendant helps me feel much calmer doing accounts, and I am less stressed at watching fluctuations of income and expenditure.
Yet another aromatic mystery...who knows how or why plants seem to take such good care of the human world, but they do.
