Occasionally in a yoga class, I invite students to close their eyes. When we soften or remove the visual sense, the other senses naturally heighten, allowing us to tune in more deeply to movement, balance, and subtle sensation. It becomes easier to feel the practice from the inside rather than relying on what we see.

Closing the eyes can also quiet the ego - the part of us that compares, judges, or insists we’re not “as good as we should be.” That inner pressure often creates unnecessary tension in the body. With the eyes closed, that voice tends to stay out of the equation, making space for presence, ease, and genuine self-awareness.

As a sports massage therapist and yoga teacher, I work with many people who do a lot of aerobic exercise. I enjoy aerobic movement myself - the rhythm, the energy, the flow. But there’s something uniquely valuable about slowing things down, as we do in yoga.

A yoga flow gives you the space to truly explore your movement. You can feel every part of your body, how it moves, how it compensates, and where it may not be working as well as it could.

This kind of awareness is incredibly useful. It helps you identify weaknesses and imbalances early, so you can strengthen those areas before they show up as pain or injury during more intense aerobic workouts, when it’s often too late to notice the warning signs.

In short, mindful movement isn’t just calming - it’s intelligent training!
