Marathon done. Now what?

Most runners focus on the race…
Very few get the recovery right.

1️⃣ Recovery starts before race day
Training, fueling, tapering — poor prep = harder recovery

2️⃣ First 24 hours matter
Rehydrate, carbs + protein, keep moving
➡️ Don’t shut the system down

3️⃣ Days 1–3
Expect soreness
Walk, move, mobilise
➡️ Motion drives recovery

4️⃣ Monitor your recovery
HR elevated? Pace feels harder? Fatigue lingering?
➡️ You’re not ready yet

5️⃣ Not all pain is “normal”
Pain, limping, or no improvement after a few days
➡️ Get it checked early

6️⃣ Don’t rush back
Rebuild, reload, progress
➡️ Pain-free ≠ performance-ready

7️⃣ Most runners guess this stage
That’s where injuries happen

8️⃣ Don’t guess. Get assessed
We look at movement, load, and return-to-run properly

This post has come from several conversations I’ve had this week with people struggling with pain, stiffness, reduced movement and issues that just aren’t improving.

And it reminded me of something important:

I want more for my clients than simply turning up to Pilates once a week.

Yes, I want you stronger.
Yes, I want you moving better.
Yes, I want you feeling fitter and more confident.

But I also want answers for you.
I want progress for you.
I want you getting the right help when something isn’t right.

Because Pilates is brilliant — but it is not a diagnosis, and it is not the answer to every problem.

Sometimes pain needs properly assessed.
Sometimes movement loss needs investigated.
Sometimes the best next step is rehab, treatment or further support.

That’s why I’m so strong on encouraging people not to ignore things and not to just “put up with it.”

If something is persistent, worsening, or not improving, I’d much rather point you in the right direction than pretend another set of stretches will solve it.

That is also why I value trusted professionals like Pendulum Physio — because when clients get the right diagnosis and plan, I can then support them properly in class with the right modifications and exercises.

That’s when real progress happens.

My classes were never meant to be just an hour of exercise.

They’re about helping people feel better, move better, and get the support they deserve.

⚠️ Hamstring injuries are one of the highest re-injury risks in sport.

Across football, rugby, and GAA, hamstrings consistently rank as:
• No. 1–2 most common injury
• Up to 30% recurrence rate
• Most re-injuries occur within the first 2–3 weeks of return to play

The issue isn’t the injury.
It’s incomplete rehab.

Most players:
• Return too early
• Skip strength at long muscle lengths
• Avoid sprinting until it’s too late

Why this matters

The hamstring isn’t just a “muscle you stretch.”

It’s a biarticular system:
• Produces hip extension
• Controls knee flexion
• Works eccentrically at high force + high speed

At top speed running:
• Hamstrings absorb massive braking forces
• Then rapidly switch to force production for propulsion

👉 This is where injuries happen
👉 And where rehab often falls short

The mistake

Pain-free is treated as the finish line.

It’s not.

Pain settling = early stage recovery
Performance capacity = late stage requiremen
