The radial nerve is essential for extension of the elbow, wrist, and fingers, enabling functional hand positioning, grip release, and powerful upper-limb movements. It also provides sensory innervation to the posterior arm, forearm, and dorsum of the hand, contributing to protective sensation.

Injury to the radial nerve causes wrist drop, significantly impairing daily activities, making it clinically important in trauma, especially humeral fractures and nerve compression injuries.
