Every year, our books are flooded with patients who injury themselves during their new year's fitness resolutions. To help you avoid this, I've put together a few tips for staying injury-free as you start your new or continue your fitness journey.
1. Start slowly: Don't try to do too much too soon. Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts to give your body time to adapt.
2. Use proper form: Proper form is important for preventing injuries. Make sure you are using proper technique when lifting weights or performing exercises.
3. Use proper equipment: Make sure you have the right equipment for your workouts and that it is in good working order. This includes shoes, weights, and other fitness equipment.
4. Listen to your body: If you are experiencing pain or discomfort while exercising, take a break and consider reducing the intensity of your workouts. It's better to take a temporary break than to push through the pain and risk injury.
5. Get enough rest and nutrition: Proper sleep and nutrition are essential for supporting your workouts and helping your body recover from exercise. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and eating a healthy, balanced diet.
6. Seek professional help: If you are unsure about how to properly perform an exercise or are experiencing pain while exercising, consider seeking the guidance of a professional. They can help you develop a safe and effective fitness plan.
Remember, it's important to challenge yourself and strive for progress, but you don’t want to be sitting out injured for the first 6 months of the year from going in too hard.
Don't be afraid of the occasional setback or injury – it's all part of the process and we will be here to help for sure.
Just make sure to listen to your body and progress appropriately, and you'll be well on your way to achieving your fitness goals.
Happy New Year!
