Andrea Hall MFHT
Sports Massage Practitioner
I see many clients who are keen sports men and women and have a variety of symptoms from lower back pain, shoulder pain, general back pain, leg cramps or hamstring pulls etc
None of these ailments are life threatening – but they can affect your everyday life activities by limiting your movements and by preventing you from participating in much loved activities.
One question often arises – Do you warm up, cool down and follow a stretching regime?
More often than not the answer is NO....... I don’t always have time!
Please make the time to do some simple stretches as this will enhance your physical abilities – both before and after your chosen activity! I remember being asked if I needed a hand to push my car one time when I was stretching my calves and hams behind it following a run!
It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old(er) – stretching after activities can help you to remain supple and strong.
If you do find yourself struggling with tight muscles or muscular aches and pains then you will benefit from a good sports massage to rid the muscles of toxins and stretch the fibres to make your everyday and sporting endeavours more comfortable.
For more information please phone or text for an appointment or to discuss your needs.

Sports Massage
Just recently I’ve treated quite a few of my clients with a combination of sports massage and Kinesiology tape – the bright coloured strips that all the best dressed athletes are wearing - and the results are very good.
Sports massage works by stretching the tissue fibres and breaking down any scar tissue that has built up as a result of the original or ongoing injury, it rids the areas of toxins that have built up and improves the overall balance of the muscles and joints affected,
Kinesiology tape, also known as K tape lifts the area of application to enhance blood and lymph flow, reducing inflammation, giving gentle support to the muscles and it also encourages proprioception which helps the body to retain balance between limbs.
So far I have treated lower backs, shoulders with muscle pulls or rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow and golfing elbow strains, pulled or overworked Achilles tendons, and knees – all with favourable outcomes.

Sports Massage

Sciatica – if you are a sufferer then I can definitely empathise. The shooting pains, the strange nerve sensations, reduced mobility and restrictions to your normal day to day activities to name but a few of the side effects.
I see a goodly number of clients who have sciatica and many have been down the GP root of referrals for x rays and MRI scans. Not only is this very costly for the NHS but the waiting times can be many weeks – throughout which you are either still suffering or the symptoms reduce only to re-occur at a later date.
Now let me tell you about the piriformis muscle – its only quite small but it is located mid buttock and if this small muscle, or the surrounding glutes are tight, this can squeeze the sciatic nerve which then gives rise to sciatica.
Sports massage works by reducing the tension around the muscle and stretching the muscle fibres and therefore reducing the squeeze on the muscle – goodbye sciatica.
Now I’m not saying that every case of sciatica is due to tight muscles but it is quite commonplace in the majority of clients that I have already worked on - some having waited months for hospital appointments only to be told that they are ‘fine’ as the spinal or bony processes are not the cause of the problem.
So if your suffering with sciatica and your medical team can't find a reason for it - sports massage may well be a good option for treatment.

Sports Massage (Lutterworth Journal - January 2017)
Now that Christmas is behind us we start looking for new challenges and what better way to start than with improving our fitness levels – whether you start by going for brisk walks or you return to the gym the first few times are always enthusiastic and you feel great as the dopamine levels increase and flow. It’s a great start to the New Year.
It’s the day after that just walking around can be uncomfortable to say the least - the dreaded DOMS has struck – Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness to be precise. There are a couple of schools of thought on why this occurs – some say it’s a build up of lactic acid and other debris left behind in the muscles, another explanation is that the muscles undergo tiny tears in the fibres during exercise – whatever the reason it hurts, but don’t be put off by it. A good warm up and cool down regime which incorporates stretching can really help you to prevent these symptoms and any gym or personal trainer can show you the best ones for you – but in the meantime, if you are suffering then a good sports massage can leave you feeling as good as new again.
Sports massage helps by ridding the muscles of the toxins and stretching the muscle and connective tissue fibres so reducing and eliminating DOMS in the majority of cases in just one session.

Its the first anniversary of the clinic today :) One year on already - where does the time go :) It's true what they say - time flies when you're having fun :) looking forward to the future :)

24/01/2016

Was working in Birmingham at the indoor cricket yesterday and one of the girls who works at the centre was really struggling - she'd been for a massage the day before and now felt so bruised she could hardly walk - took a few minutes to settle it all down again but can't help feeling that there are practitioners out there that use far too much pressure just for the sake of it - why would you dig your elbow into a young womans shoulder when she only had a niggly pain and not very much musculature.
Surely the first thing we learn is DO NO HARM !!!!!!!
Come on guys - just cos you can doesn't mean you should - and as a general rule of thumb I prefer my clients to feel better after treatment - not worse!!!

08/01/2016

Happy bank holiday to all :) Happily been busy today and bookings for the week going well but appointments available for Monday and Wednesday evening slots so feel free to call me for an appointment on 07976 569 074 :)
Over the past few weeks I've had 3 clients who have had issues with their lumbar spine which have greatly improved with massage - but then during their follow up appointments and observing the clients' explain how they were feeling, I identified an issue with the IT band being tight and causing problems with the knee. The point being that the issue with the IT band wasn't apparent until after the lower back problems began to resolve itself with treatment - and in each case the IT band issues had been put down as being due to nerve impingement by their GP's.
so this is my question to my fellow practitioners - have you come across this issue before yourselves and is it a common occurrence?
