Thank goodness, it never made any sense to me.

I had been home from hospital less than a week when my first born had started to cry during dinner. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that if I went to him every time he cried I’d be doing it for the rest of his life, that babies manipulate you with their cries. ‘Manipulate’ he was two weeks old. He has one way to let me know he needs me and that is it. Manipulate indeed. I ignored that advice then and I encourage you to ignore it now.

Denmark is taking a major step by moving to end the “cry it out” method for babies after a nationwide study revealed potential harms. Over 700 psychologists warned that this sleep training practice could negatively impact brain development and parent-child attachment. The findings emphasise the importance of responsive caregiving during the early stages of life for healthy emotional and cognitive growth.

The study examined the effects of letting babies cry for extended periods and found links to elevated stress levels and possible long-term impacts on brain function. While some parts of the U.S. continue to recommend the method, Denmark’s decision reflects growing concern among experts about the risks versus the benefits of this approach. Advocates of alternative sleep strategies stress nurturing and gradual methods to promote better sleep without compromising developmental outcomes.

This move is sparking viral attention globally among parenting and health communities. It highlights a shift in understanding early childhood care and the need for policies informed by psychological research. Parents and caregivers are now encouraged to explore safer, evidence-based sleep strategies that support both healthy brain development and secure emotional bonds with their children.

Truth!

As it is they do still need you they just have so much going on in the scrambled minds that they don’t know how to communicate it any more.

Still tell them you’re@ there though.

Say:

“Ok well I’ll be in the living room with crisps and watching Hot Fuzz if you fancy it.’

Don’t expect them to come in but know that the fact that they know you’re there and an option will mean so much.

Anyway crisps and Hot Fuzz - what’s not to love? That’s a great night alone!

Happy Sunday!

A tricky day for kids who dread school. It stops being a ‘day of rest’ and becomes the precursor to early starts, uncomfortable uniform and social anxiety. There’s no one size fits all but I have found the following help.

Get them outside. Ground those feet, get muddy, cold, out of breath.

Make family plans for Sunday rather than Saturday, it’s quieter too.

Get them away from screens.

Fundamentally, get them tired.

The more tired they are the easier they’ll find it to go to sleep and the less mental energy they’ll have for school-eve anxiety.

I know this is easier said than done but getting into these habits from young will help prevent Sunday being a battle of high emotions. Good luck.

A little switcheroo.

It seems that the support you need for your little and not so little humans is more emotional and social than academic.
As I say in my blurb my approach focuses on the child as a whole not just their academic ability so not a huge shift just a slight shuffle and new branding!

Drop me a message or give me a call and let me know how I can help.

When the boys were younger we read this every Christmas Eve (and often a bit before too). The language is old but the children never noticed really. They’d just ask what certain things meant and we’d either discuss them or look them up together. You don’t always have to be the font of all knowledge with kids it’s good for them to see that you don’t know everything, that even as an adult there’s room to learn and grow.

My utterly brilliant best friend is now a published poet. During lockdown her husband Doug was diagnosed with brain cancer. As a means of processing this diagnosis, the subsequent and inevitable, fairly rough rollercoaster ride, his death and the fall out of the whole process she wrote poetry. Poetry that kept her sane (well as sane as she is anyway). Poetry that will make you laugh out loud and cry quietly. Poetry that will touch your soul. Whether or not you’ve experienced anything similar it is still a fabulous read.

There is something truly magical about reading with a child. Even if a little one faces challenges such as dyslexia, the joy of reading together goes far beyond decoding words on a page. It nurtures curiosity, strengthens imagination, and builds a bond that no difficulty can diminish.

Reading aloud, listening to stories, and exploring ideas together remind children that stories belong to everyone — no matter how they read them.

I started this little business to make a difference to children who might just need a little extra support through primary school, those who need a boost in confidence or some simple strategies to help them navigate learning and growing up. I am looking forward to meeting more clients and making a difference to young lives.
