🐔 Meet the Ladies – Introducing Summer 🌼

This is Summer — our beautiful Swedish Flower girl.

Unlike many of the retirement residents, Summer isn’t an ex-commercial rescue. She came to us after a fox attack took her flock mate, Storm. It had just been the two of them, and to save her from the same fate, the lovely Kay brought her here to live safely at Yewtree Farm.

Kay was worried sick.

We already had a flock of tough, no-nonsense girls. Integrating chickens can be brutal, and nobody wanted sweet Summer to be bullied.

Well.

That didn’t quite go to plan.

Instead of being terrorised, Summer quietly sized everyone up… and took charge.

She is what I lovingly call “the grumpy girl.”
Not unkind.
Just… decisive.

She doesn’t flap.
She doesn’t fuss.
And she absolutely does not tolerate silliness.

Somewhere along the way, she and Rose formed an alliance.

And now?

They run the place.

The two matriarchs of the Hen Retirement Home.
Nobody gets the better of them.
Nobody argues with them.

They are lovely girls.
But they are definitely the boss.

And honestly?
We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every retirement home has that one resident.

The original.
The matriarch.
The one who’s seen it all.

This is Rose — my very first rescue hen.
The OG of the Hen Retirement Home.

She arrived feather-worn but fierce, and she has ruled the flock ever since.

Rose doesn’t flap about unnecessarily.
She doesn’t tolerate nonsense.
And she absolutely does not queue for food.

She is calm.
She is commanding.
And she takes no messing from anybody.

Over the years she’s watched flock members come and go — that’s the hard side of rescue. But Rose? She’s steady. Solid. Still here. Still standing guard.

She is the original retirement girl.

The leader.
The boss.
The standard.

And she’s here to stay.

🐔 We’re Officially a Hen Retirement Home

It’s official.

Yewtree Farm is now home to our very own Hen Retirement Home — a soft landing for ex-commercial girls who’ve already done their time.

These aren’t “layers.”
They’re retirees.

They arrive feather-worn, hormonally exhausted, and often physically depleted from years of intensive laying. What they get here is something very different:

Three separate coops.
Space.
Fresh greens.
Bananas for breakfast (and yes… bananas don’t come cheap).
Clean bedding.
Sunbathing rights.
Zero pressure.

Some of the girls still lay eggs for a while — not because they’re pushed, but because their bodies naturally continue. When we have surplus, we’ll offer them locally.

Not as a commercial operation.
Not as a production line.

Just eggs from retirement girls.

Every box helps cover:
• Proper feed
• Bedding
• Supplements
• Health checks
• Vet bills when needed

If you buy a box, you’re not funding production.

Hi, I’m Laura — owner of EMBER, a serene beauty space on the Cheshire border where relaxation truly comes first.

EMBER offers a calm, tranquil setting designed for you to switch off, unwind and enjoy a carefully curated range of beauty treatments, surrounded by like-minded health and wellness businesses here at Yew Tree Farm.

Opening March 2026 ✨
Available 2–3 days per week.
