🫀 Heartstart Lymm: Understanding the Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015
At Heartstart Lymm, we believe in empowering everyday heroes—those who step forward in moments of crisis to help others. Whether you're administering CPR, using a defibrillator, or simply offering reassurance, your actions matter. But did you know there's a law that supports you when you act in good faith?
🛡️ What is the SARAH Act?
The Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 is a UK law designed to reassure volunteers, first responders, and good Samaritans. It ensures that if someone is sued for negligence or breach of statutory duty, courts must consider:
Whether the person was acting for the benefit of society (e.g., helping in an emergency).
Whether they were demonstrating a generally responsible approach to safety.
Whether they were acting heroically in an emergency situation.
In short, the law encourages people to help others without fear of legal repercussions—as long as their actions are reasonable and responsible.
💬 Why It Matters to Heartstart Lymm
Our volunteers and trainees often ask: “What happens if something goes wrong while I’m trying to help?” The SARAH Act provides legal reassurance. It acknowledges that in emergencies, decisions must be made quickly and with limited information. The law supports those who act with courage and care.
🧠 Real-World Example
In a 2025 case, a cycling club was found not liable for a collision during an event because they were “acting for the benefit of members of society.” The court applied the SARAH Act to assess their duty of care as reasonably competent volunteers.
🙌 Encouraging Action
At Heartstart Lymm, we train people to respond confidently and compassionately. The SARAH Act reinforces our message: doing something is better than doing nothing—and the law is on your side when you act responsibly.
An Act to make provision as to matters to which a court must have regard in determining a claim in negligence or breach of statutory duty.
