A herbal tonic delight.
Herbal tonics are like compost is to the earth. This recipe is a wonderful and delicious way to support our body's general well-being . It’s also so simple to make in your own kitchen.

Add the following herbs into a jar that has a tight lid.
Hawthorn berries
Rose Hips
Cinnamon powder or dried bark.

Add a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar and runny honey.
Cover the dried herbs with the mix .
Checking all the herbs are covered in the liquid.
Screw lid on tightly .

Place the jar some where you will notice it daily . Leave in this position for 2 weeks.
Each day gently shake the jar and it’s herbal contents .

After 2 weeks strain the the mixture and you will be left with such nectar . Place the herbal liquid in a clean jar and store in the fridge.

Each day you can delight in a spoonful of this powerful liquid tonic syrup. You can add to porridge, yogurt or stewed fruit or simply enjoy straight from the spoon.

The smallest expression of kindness to the body can ignite a healing/ enlivening process.

If our body feels heavy
If our minds feel frantically busy
If our daily life feels chaotic

Offering one “ bitesize piece “ of kindness , of support, of care, of listening to the body moves mountains, it truly does .

Simply stopping for a herbal cuppa and including ritual in the process can be one such expression of care .

Placing the herbs in the pot with care with attention.
Pouring on the water. Letting the herbs brew/ infuse.
Pouring into a cup we enjoy.
This is ritual if you like when bowed down to with our sacred attention, with care.
The body responds to the rhythm of care.
When we sip the infusion , the herbs touch the tissues of the body reminding the body of its innate qualities. Vitalising, soothing and restoring equilibrium.
Herbs are our body’s ally . Herbs are droplets of care offered to the body with love . Enjoy your daily cuppa x

The Latin word for medicine is medicina, meaning the art of healing.
I would like to share how caring for the body is an art form, be that of a so called healthy body or one experiencing discomfort.
The creativity and wonder of listening to the body , of responding to the body with care and attention in the same way in which we care for a child.

Supporting the body’s functioning with nourishing and vitalising foods and offering the body the wonderful herbs is such a blessing in so many ways.

Herbs are an offering in the sense of their properties and qualities being a reminder to the body of the functioning of the physiology as a whole and realigning with its innate harmony. Rather than holding an aspect of the physiology in a state that must be maintained .

Meadowsweet.

Meadowsweet sings of supporting the digestive area, this gentle, soothing approach of drinking an infusion of meadowsweet .
Ease and sensitivity is often what is welcomed by the digestive area when it is experiencing distress or sometimes pain.
Ease on many levels not just in terms of discomfort but also ease of the functioning of the system , be that in over activity or under activity. Ease in supporting the realigning of the over activity or lack of activity to return to its natural flow and harmony.

Meadowsweet reminds the body it’s safe to open to the sense of spaciousness and affirms the physiological process of assimilating, digesting and eliminating. Celebrating rest and movement.

Bliss and mystery of deep sleep.

Just as we sometimes soothe a baby into sleep, we can soothe the body when needed with similar rituals, reassurances, care and love.

As we rock a baby gently held in our arms , the babys body is offered a gentle rhythm. a creative sense of safety, care and love. Safe to rest back, let the eyes gently close, let go into deep sleep.

There is so much scientific research explored each year associated with sleep patterns and benefits. All of which affirm what each of us know directly deep within particulary after experiencing the nectar of deep sleep.

We can ignite this remembering within the body. Yes it may take sometimes changing some of our patterns during daily life.

I offer these suggestions of care for the body in welcoming deep sleep with gentleness acknowldging the mysterious nature of sleep. Also acknowldging the distress that is sometimes experienced when we are unable to sleep.

For this post my suggestion is to start with herbal cuppas during the evening. If you enjoy a bath the herbal infusions can be added to the bath water.

Here are the herbal allies i would suggest using as an infusion. Drinking one cup early evening and another cup before bed. You could also take a flask of the infusion to bed with you to drink a little if you wake in the night.

An infusion of oat straw and passion flower.
why these herbs ?

Oat straw nourishes the nervous sytem on a very deep level. the body is reminded of a snense of equilibrum . Such a blessing, a gentle light taste that reminds us of fields of oats, of the earths nourishment. A sense of being held in warm blanket of care.

Passionflower .

This beautiful plant reminds the body of relaxation and gently calms the nervous sytem. A wonderful herbal ally to soothe the busy mind and offers some sedative qualities to remind the body of deep sleep.

Enjoy and may the body be held in the arms of wholeness, oneness, love.

Using herbs to care for the body.

An approach of offering herbal medicine as an expression of care for the body, as an opportunity for an exploration of being.
An approach were we feel safe in life , as life, where experience is both valued and cared for as an experience of the whole of life.
We are the custodians, if you like of our body, so it makes sense to care for the body as we would a child, with sensitivity, with listening, with care, with love.
Taking care of the body is an act of love. caring for the body as we would a child with loving warm acceptance.
Such an attitude of care towards the body not only when symptoms arise but also can be our position in daily life.
It is so easy as we all know when we hear popular sayings such as as self care and self kindness to override the signposting they invite. Thoughts of I’ve heard it all before, I haven’t got time, I need something more than self kindness. Yet when we live expressions of self kindness, when we care for the body as we would a child, this attitude moves mountains , it truly does ! The body feels the impact of such care.

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing posts of our wonderful herbal allies that touch the body with the tenderness of care. Nourishing and vitalising the body. As we sip herbal infusions or mix herbal powders we are reminded of self kindness and care for the body.

We can receive the benefits and gifts of our plant allies in so many different ways.

Simply by entering a green space filled with nature our biochemistry responds by supporting the functioning of the body’s physiology.
* blood pressure lowers.
* cortisol starts to fall away.
* immune lymphocytes increase.

Amazingly also the fragrance of our plant allies support the functioning of our body as well.

* the oils produced by the plants called phytoncides when inhaled
the Body’s immune ,circulation and nervous systems are revitalised and supported.

* by drinking a daily herbal cuppa .

* by adding herbal powders to our food and drinks.

* by eating a rich and varied plant based diet.

Such a delight to experience this warming tonic cuppa.

* Deep nourishment for the body.
* A delight to experience through the senses while sipping this tonic cuppa, the taste, the fragrance, the colours of the powdered plants.

In a bowl mix together the following powdered plants.
Rose
Cinnamon
Cacao

Warm oat milk on the stove and add one or two tsps of the mixed powdered plants.
If you wish add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey.
sip and delight in this cup of nectar .

I would consider this cuppa a great tonic for the body. Supporting the nervous system and the immune system. A vitalising cuppa anytime of the day or evening. Alongside being experienced as a delight to the senses as the taste , the fragrance, the colours touch the body.

Herbs offer the most consistent care if taken regularly. So a daily herbal cuppa is an easy and simple way to include this wonderful herbal allies into the ritual of daily life.

Herbs are the body's friend whispering gently of our wholeness, of our beauty. By supporting the body's remembering of its heritage, of its vibrational structure, of the interconnectedness of each aspect of the physiological system.

Herbs offer this to the body through simultaneously reminding the body of its functioning as a whole alongside supporting individual aspects of the body's physiology.

Great autumn /winter time daily cuppa .

Nettle leaf. Great tonic, builds, strengthens and sustains wellbeing. Packed with vitamins and minerals. Whispers to the body of nurture .

Oats . A wonderful balancing, supportive and restorative herb for the nervous system . Supports equilibrium within the physiology when the body is under stress. Packed with vitamins and minerals including silicon. Whispers to the body of self kindness and self care, of light.

Olive leaf. This gentle, soft herb yet packed with strength . Great for supporting the immune system . Packed with antioxidants and more ! Whispers to the body of peace.

We are about to enter the last month of Autumn. This is a season I delight in, the colours, the autumn foods, the cooler air on the face, the leaves dancing in the air as they fall to the ground.
Research shows us how the body’s biochemistry is supported and responsive to nature. The smell of the earth, the smell of the grass, the colours of autumn leaves, the crisp air as it touches the skin. All of these felt sensations internally and externally arising through the body calm and balance the biochemistry of the body.
Autumn is a season when we can care for the body with deeply nourishing foods and herbs which support the immune and respiratory systems .

Autumn foods include roasted root veg, squashes, beetroot, baked and stewed apples, barley and buckwheat .

Autumn spices include ginger, cardamom,cinnamon, turmeric.

Autumn herbal infusions include nettle leaf, raspberry leaf, oat straw and herbal chai.

Night time arrives earlier than the long summer evenings.
We can welcome this evening darkness as an opportunities to curl up with a book, have a herbal bath, watch a movie Catch up with loved ones.
Lighting fragrant candles can signal space to rest back for a short time in these darker evenings. The following warming drink that offers support to the both the immune and nervous systems can be a wonderful autumn evening treat.

Cup of oat or almond milk warmed on the stove .
Add the following powdered herbs
Rose, cinnamon, cocoa . Mix or whisked together and optional drizzle of maple syrup.

All of these suggestions can be gently and simply added into daily life as a way to care for the body during Autumn time.

Autumn elixir to create in your kitchen and offer with love and care to your body.

Place the following plants ( either dried or powdered ) into a jar with a tight lid.
Hawthorn berries
Rose Hips
Cinnnamon
Rose
All placed with care and gratitude.

Pour equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and honey over the plants until they are covered. Conscious of the flow and movement of these golden liquids. Stand on your kitchen worktop for 10 to 14 days. Take time each day to shake the jar enabling the contents to move freely.
After 10 to 14 days strain and take 1 tsp of this elixir daily.

This colourful nectar is nutrient dense . Oozing with care for the body/mind. Just 1 tsp daily will whisper to the body of well-being.
Such a simple, easy and natural way we can offer care to our body. An offering that reminds the body of its natural flow, ease and vitality.
All the ingredients dance together . Each ingredient unique in what it offers to the body. Simultaneously as one elixir in each tsp offered to the body.

Herbal medicine can be so much richer than simply being used as prescriptive medicine.

Herbal medicine has been evolving over many moons. Most recently it has entered the mainstream psyche through the popularism of the supplement market and herbal tea bags on the supermarket shelves. This has brought about many benefits for herbalism in general terms yet at the same time has increased a prescriptive response to the use of herbal medicine.
Herbal medicine can be much richer than simply being used prescriptively . Herbs and healing foods are reminders if you like to a healing potential that lies within the living body.
