Meet Judith, one of our residents with a flair for creativity!
What began as a simple hobby soon blossomed into a lifelong passion for Judith, who spent many years teaching the art of flower arranging.
In her early 30s, she and a friend regularly attended weekly classes, which soon led to them creating floral displays for local churches, weddings, and special occasions.
Eager to share her skills, Judith pursued a teacher training qualification through an evening course at South Trafford College.
This opened the door for her to teach City & Guilds flower arranging courses—first for five years on a three-year programme, and later for another ten years at the Wilmslow Guild.
Judith’s favourite style is contemporary flower arranging, and her favourite flower is the sweet pea, which brings back fond memories of her childhood garden.
Judith, our in-house flower arranging expert, shares some key tips to help your floral displays look their best and last longer:
Conditioning is crucial – Trim about 2 inches off the stems at a slant and place them in water with plant food the day before arranging.
Remove lower foliage – Any leaves that would sit below the waterline should be removed to prevent rot and bacteria.
Consider scale and colour – Always choose flowers that suit the size and colour of your container for a balanced and pleasing arrangement.
Keep it fresh – Change the water every two days to help your flowers stay vibrant and fresh for longer.
When asked what she believes is the most important skill in flower arranging, Judith said: “A creative eye for judgement.”
We're excited to share that Judith will be starting a monthly flower arranging class in the activity room. Everyone is welcome – come along and get inspired!
