World Diabetes Day 2023

Diabetic retinopathy is a common eye disease that is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. This disease is caused when high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the retina (a light-sensitive layer of cells in the back of the eye). Damaged blood vessels can swell and leak, causing blurry vision or stopping blood flow.

Diabetic screening is offered to all people with diabetes aged 12 and over to pick up and treat any problems early on

June celebrates Cataract Awareness Month 👁️

Cataracts are a condition of the eye where the lens becomes cloudy.

This condition impedes your vision because light entering your eye is prevented from being bent by the lens of your eye due to the cloudy film covering it.

Symptoms of cataracts include seeing halos around lights, faded colours, blurry vision, and trouble in driving, reading, or doing other tasks.

The most successful treatment for cataracts is surgery whereby the doctors remove the damaged lens and replace it with an artificial one.

You can also prevent cataracts by regularly getting your eyes checked.

It's important for children to have their eyes tested every two years.

Your child's vision develops rapidly after birth, and anything that interrupts this development can lead to visual impairment in later life.

Eye tests can detect the early progression of eye conditions that are genetically passed on through generations, as well as refractive errors like short or long-sightedness and astigmatism. These detections can be vital to preventing vision loss.

Children rarely complain of having poor vision in one or both eyes, because they don’t know any difference. Problems can easily go unnoticed, especially when it only affects one eye.

Too much screen time can be unhealthy for our eyes.

If you use a computer screen all day or spend long periods of time looking at your smart device, it is important to look away from your screen regularly to help keep your eyes comfortable.

If you suffer from headaches when using a computer even with regular breaks, you may need to have a pair of glasses, especially for computer work - your optometrist can assess this.

It's recommended that most people should get their eyes tested every 2 years.

Regular eye examinations can help detect certain eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, which could lead to sight loss or poor vision.

Having your vision corrected can improve the quality of day-to-day life.

World Glaucoma Week marks thirteen years of raising awareness to eliminate glaucoma blindness.

Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged.

It's usually caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases pressure inside the eye.

Glaucoma can lead to loss of vision if it's not diagnosed and treated early.
