🏡 WHAT CAN YOU DO OUTSIDE OF HOSPITAL TO STAY ACTIVE? 🏡

The physical activity guidelines developed for those over 65 aim to promote the benefits of physical activity including quality of life, mental health, sleep quality and reduce the likelihood of co-morbidities.

The guideline promotes maintenance and improvement of aerobic capacity, strength, bone health and balance.

In East Cheshire, there are charities such as Health & Leisure that provide exercise and leisure opportunities tailored for people who may struggle with their balance and mobility as well as those with various health conditions including dementia, Parkinson’s disease and osteoarthritis.

⚠️ RISK AND FEAR OF FALLING ⚠️

People who are deconditioned or have limited mobility are at an increased risk of falling due to decreased muscle mass, strength and balance.

The risk of falling can also increase if someone does not have sufficient nutritional or fluid intake.

Experiencing falls can increase someone’s fear of falling which can decrease their confidence to mobilise and participate in physical or social activity.

Further reductions in physical activity and mobility associated with fear of falling can lead to further deconditioning.

Our therapy teams are experts in supporting people to be fit and healthy and confident to reduce their risk of falling.

🛌 DECONDITIONING AND FUNCTIONAL DECLINE 🛌

Deconditioning is a decline in the body’s physical function following prolonged periods of inactivity such as prolonged bed rest.

Effects of deconditioning include, but are not limited to, decreased muscle mass, strength and balance.

The effects of deconditioning can lead to functional decline which affects a person’s ability to independently mobilise and complete activities of daily living which can increase their care needs on discharge.

Our therapy teams are specialists in helping people to avoid deconditioning and stay as independent as possible, even during an inpatient stay.

🚶 MOBILITY MATTERS 🚶

Even when in hospital, it is really important to stay mobile.

Prolonged bed rest can have a variety of negative impacts on mobility and independence , which can increase length of hospital stay and likelihood of readmission.

Our inpatient teams have been looking at a variety of effects prolonged bedrest can have and ways that we can support patients to avoid them.
