🧠💉 Meningitis Vaccines – What Parents Need to Know
At Bron‑Y‑Garn Surgery, we’ve recently had a few questions about the difference between the MenB and MenACWY vaccines, especially for teenagers and young adults heading off to college, university or travelling.
Here’s a quick guide:
🔹 MenB protects against group B meningococcal disease
🔹 MenACWY protects against groups A, C, W & Y
🍼 MenB is given as part of the routine infant vaccination programme.
If your child had it as a baby, they usually won’t need it again as a teenager or adult unless there’s a specific medical reason.
🏥 In Wales, MenB is not offered on the NHS for older teenagers or young adults.
If you’d like MenB at this age, it would need to be arranged privately via a community pharmacy or private vaccination clinic.
✔️ MenACWY is available FREE on the NHS up to age 25 if missed earlier.
If you’re unsure whether your child has had theirs, please get in touch and we can check.
If you have any questions about meningitis protection or want to book a vaccination, our team at Bron‑Y‑Garn Surgery is here to help. 💙
