Understandably we have had many queries about the meningitis vaccination.
The strain of meningitis that has caused the outbreak in Kent is Meningitis B.
Children born on or after 1 September 2015, they will have been offered a vaccination against meningitis B as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme.
If you were born prior to September 2015 you will not have had the meningitis b vaccine.
At this moment in time there is no catch up programme available if you have not had the meningitis b vaccine, so we are unable to give it. The vaccine can be sourced privately.
A vaccination against meningitis types A, C, W and Y is offered to young people at around 13/14 years of age (school year nine), but a catch-up vaccination can be given up until the age of 25.
If you are under 25 and missed the meningitis ACWY vaccine in school we are able to give this and you can book an appointment with our nurses for this.

CARE NAVIGATOR, LLYNFI SURGERY, MAESTEG

We are looking to recruit a care navigator to join our team at Llynfi Surgery

As our care navigator, you will be the first point of contact for our service. Our Care navigator’s duties include offering administrative support across all staff. You will welcome patients and greet people who visit the surgery. You will undertake front desk activities, answer incoming calls from patients wishing to book an appointment and be responsible for allocating appropriate patient appointments. Your duties will include distributing correspondence and redirecting phone calls.

To be successful as our care navigator, you should have a pleasant personality, as this is a customer service role. You should also be able to deal with emergencies in a timely and effective manner. Multitasking and stress management skills are essential for this position. This role will require working in shifts, so flexibility is a plus.

Ultimately, our care navigator’s duties and responsibilities are to ensure the front desk welcomes patients positively and carries out all administrative tasks to the highest quality standards.

Previous care navigating experience in a busy practice would be ideal but not essential, as full training will be provided.

We appreciate how lucky we are in the Llynfi valley with excellent input from the several pharmacies in the area.

Modern day pharmacies offer a wealth of services that was traditionally only done by the GP. Although the GPs still offer these services, the idea behind this is to allow GPs to delve deeper into complex conditions that often require more time and input for following up and continuity.

If you are worried about getting a quick appointment with the GP don’t forget to ask at your local pharmacist as they have the tools and skills available to prescribe antibiotics where appropriate for UTIs/tonsillitis/ear infections and have a wealth of experience on many other conditions from Allergic Rhinitis (hay fever) to Zoster rash (shingles) and many conditions in between.
