What is Body Composition Testing?
Analysing the composition of your body. This allows for the differentiation of fat vs fat free mass. Tracking bodyweight using a scale will only give an indication of total weight loss/gain. This doesnโt reveal whether you are losing fat, muscle or water weight.
Why is it useful?
Body composition testing can help assess health status by providing data on body mass index, weight circumference and body fat percentage. It allows one to track progression of lifestyle interventions for health, performance or aesthetic reasons. Being able to differentiation between fat vs fat free mass allows tracking of progression of diets and exercise. For weight gain you generally want to increase muscle/fat free mass while maintaining or reducing fat mass. For weight loss the goal should be reducing fat mass and preserving muscle mass.
How?
We will test weight, height, body site measurements and body fat percentage using skinfold measurements. The method of calculating body fat percentage, uses skinfold callipers to measure adipose fat under the skin at 7 different sites on the body. These are then used to calculate the total body fat percentage which is then referenced against body fat percentage norms for men and women for the relevant age group. This can help identify healthy vs unhealthy body fat percentage levels.
