Did you know that your brain physically changes itself in response to new experiences and learning?

This "neuroplasticity" means that our brains can change, adapt and build new habits, even in adulthood.

Studies show that learning new skills, practicing mindfulness and aerobic exercise can all promote neuroplasticity.

Repetition is key. As we repeat behaviours, our brains rewire to make them easier, discarding older, unused patterns in the process.

“Things start out as hopes and end up as habits." - Lillian Hellman

Habits are created by repetition but you don't need a perfect streak to achieve your goals. Just the hope to keep trying until the habit sticks.

Did you know exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells (neurogenesis)?

Studies show it can promote neurogenesis in the hippocampus, a brain region associated with memory & spatial navigation.

This can impact both cognitive processes & our stress responses.

Both aerobic exercise (eg. walking, swimming, cycling etc.) & non-aerobic exercise (eg. weights, yoga etc.) have been shown to have similar benefits, so choose movement you enjoy at an intensity that feels comfortable to repeat regularly.

"Everything you can imagine is real" - Pablo Picasso

Did you know your brain can't tell the difference between imagination and reality?

I thought this was a great quote for this time of year when we focus on fresh starts and new goals.

When you can really imagine what it looks like and feels like to achieve your goals, you can see the next steps more clearly and are more motivated to keep trying.

What are you imagining for your life this year?

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” — Maya Angelou

It's hard to feel successful when you are measuring yourself against someone else's version of success. It's hard to motivate yourself when you are following someone else's pathway to get there. You might not even enjoy the success you worked so hard for when you achieve it.

This is a reminder that success comes in all shapes and sizes. You are not designed to be a carbon copy of someone else. You are an individual with your own needs and your own values. So you need your own vision, your own path and your own permission to find your own success, your way.

With so much to do in December, we often forget to leave time in our busy schedules to rest and recharge.

Every day this month, I will be posting a simple self care idea to inspire you to take some well-deserved recovery time.

☑️ Day 14: Write a ta-da list ☑️

To do lists are really helpful when life is busy but they aren't always so great for our mental health.

How often do you get to the end of a busy day and realise that you haven't made any progress at all on your to do list? Sometimes you'll just shake off the disappointment, get an early night and resolve to do better tomorrow but often your instincts won't be quite so helpful. Maybe you'll beat yourself up, tell yourself you're lazy or not gooed enough. Maybe you'll stay up late and try to get it all done. Maybe you'll manage both of those while inhaling a packet of biscuits or a bottle of wine.

Next time you're feeling you haven't achieved enough, try writing a ta-da list instead:
☑️ Think about what you have actually done today.
☑️ Did you get out of bed? Write it down
☑️ Did you get dressed? Shower? Write it down?
☑️ Did you wait on hold for an hour and hang up before you got through? Write it down
☑️ Did you tidy the kitchen only to mess it up again later? Write it down
☑️ Did you do the school run? Go shopping? Read or answer emails? Write it all down
☑️ Did you listen to your body and actually rest? Definitely write that down
☑️ Once that's all written down, take a good look and give yourself credit for how much you have actually achieved. Even if it wasn't all on the list.

What are you proud of this week?

"People with dreams succeed because they know where they're going. It's that simple." - Earl Nightingale

Would you start driving without knowing where you were going? Would you even put on your coat or open the door?

Mental journeys are just the same - you need to know where you are going to move towards your destination.

So before you start telling yourself you're lazy or unmotivated, think about whether you really know where you are going:

🚀 What does it look like?
🚀 What does it feel like?
🚀 Why is it important?

When you have a really clear picture of what achieving your goals looks like, it's easier to motivate and move forwards.

If you don't know yet, maybe you still need a bit of daydreaming time to imagine your destination and what those first steps might look like for you.

If you would like some individual support on that journey, please get in touch.

We all know that resting and self care benefit our own wellbeing but many of us don’t feel we have time to put ourselves first especially at this time of year.

You may tell yourself that taking a break is “unproductive” and “lazy” when the to do list is so long. You might berate yourself for spending time on a hobby, as “selfish”. The onslaught of social media posts about productivity and being present with our loved ones just pile on the guilt.

If that’s you, here’s a reminder that making your own needs a priority also benefits everyone around you.

When you are relaxed, you also have:
✨ Better communication skills for strong relationships
✨Increased energy to get things done
✨More capacity to be present in the moment
✨Clearer thinking, making better decisions

Most of all, a happy you is a joy to spend time with – you smile more, you respond positively and have more capacity to be help others when they need it.

✨ Self care is a public service – everyone benefits ✨

With so much to do in December, we often forget to leave time in our busy schedules to rest and recharge.

Every day this month, I will be posting a simple self care idea to inspire you to take some well-deserved recovery time.

🌳 Day 1: Spend time outdoors 🌳

Whether you are meeting friends for a long, restorative walk in the park or you can only make time to stand outside your front door for 5 minutes while you gulp a lukewarm cup of tea, time outside can really help your mood.

Where can you find a few minutes for yourself this week?

"Self-esteem is not a luxury; it is a profound spiritual need." - Nathaniel Branden

Often our self worth rises and falls depending on what we have achieved or how we compare to others.

When we have good self esteem, we take better care of ourselves physically and mentally, we cope better and are more motivated to achieve our goals.

So it makes sense to value ourselves unconditionally, because we achieve more when we believe we are good enough.

It doesn't matter what you have or haven't done today. You are always good enough and deserve to be treated well.

Did you know your brain activity is as unique as a fingerprint?

Yesterday the MYndspan team scanned my brain for the second time as part of their research into brain health and activity over time.

I find it fascinating that the patterns of our brain activity are as unique as a fingerprint pattern.

We used to think that two brains doing the same activity looked much the same - one brain at rest would look like another brain at rest.

In fact, brain patterns are unique and always look most like themselves. Whether at rest, at work or at play, the patterns your brain makes are surprisingly consistent and individual to you.

So when a computer is programmed to look for similar brain scans, it will nearly always identify a scan of the same person as most alike, even in a large database. Isn't that amazing?

I'll be interested to know whether my brain looks noticeably different after a 15 minute speedwalk (the train was late!) It was certainly easier to sit still this time.

"Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn't mean you can, should, or need to do it alone." - Lisa Olivera

Sometimes asking for help is really tough. When you are exhausted and overwhelmed, it's hard to even know what help you need.

Taking that first step and reaching out is brave, but once you take it, you no longer need to go it alone.
