Donald Woods Winnicott was an English paediatrician and psychoanalyst known for his ability to convey with simplicity how early childhood experiences can shape adult life. In particular the holding environment, in which children develop their sense of self. When the holding environment is nurturing, stable and consistent, a child develops a healthy sense of self. Winnicott translated the holding environment into his way of facilitating the psychoanalytic endeavour, crucial to this was understanding the importance of play.

This is Group Imago, the mental image you have of a group. This can be any group you are part of. It is your subjective experience of being in that group. Eric Berne was a psychiatrist who ran psychotherapy groups using his famous model of personality and relationships, Transactional Analysis, to observe the dynamics between people. He saw that each person was having their own unique experience of being in the group, which brought up unresolved problems that played out.

Groups usually mirror our original family and group therapy in this way can facilitate the resolution of early childhood experiences. This is personal development in a group. The Group Imago model can also be applied to group development, which is is a powerful tool in organisations or any setting where people meet regularly as a group. The group imago changes as the group goes through the key stages of its evolution.
