A little thread to help those with eating problems whether it's over- or under-eating. The first thing to establish is a regular eating plan. This means not going for more than four waking hours without either having a snack or one of your main three meals during the day.

Regular eating doesn't leave us feeling starving hungry therefore it helps to lessen the urge to binge eat. This in turn improves our mood which makes us less likely to binge eat. A positive cycle starts to emerge. Makes sense, eh?

Regular eating is less about what you're eating and more about when. It introduces structure and a bit of normality back into chaotic or non-existent eating patterns. Once you've established a decent routine you can then look more at what you're eating.

The next thing to try is conscious eating. This means really slowing down the process and being deliberate about eating. Savouring the textures, tastes, smells. Listening to what our body is telling us. Try this next time you're sat down at the table (another important factor).

Normally people find they are satiated much quicker therefore eat less as they are able to hear the signal that their stomach has had enough food. People can then start to trust themselves more around food and feel a greater sense of control. A boost to self-confidence.

The beauty of conscious eating is that you can take it wherever you go and nobody needs to know you're doing it. I often have to check in with myself when eating too fast. Slow down! Food is a necessity but it's also there to be enjoyed. How often we take food for granted.

You don't need an eating disorder to establish a regular eating pattern or to practice conscious eating - this is stuff we can all benefit from. I'd love to hear your experiences if any of the above helps you.
