Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a large acute hospital Trust in the south east of England. The Trust was legally established on 14 February 2000 and provides a full range of general hospital services, and some areas of specialist complex care to around 560,000 people living in the south of West Kent and the north of East Sussex. The Trustโ€™s core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs, and it operates from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. The latter is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital and provides wholly single bedded en-suite accommodation for in-patients. The Trust employs a team of over 5000 full and part-time staff. In addition, the Trust provides specialist cancer services to around 1.8 million people across Kent, Hastings and Rother, via the Kent Oncology Centre, which is sited at Maidstone Hospital, and at Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. The Trust also provides outpatient clinics across a wide range of locations in Kent and East Sussex. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€โžก๏ธ Our Stroke team will be lacing up their running shoes and taking on the Paddock Wood half marathon on 8 March, raising funds for our MTW Hospitals Charity

Clinical Lead for Stroke, Catherine Mandri, Clinical Specialist Neuro Occupational Therapist, Sarah Shipton and Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, Eleanor Doherty are hoping to raise ยฃ500 to redesign staff and patient common rooms on the Stroke Unit.

โœจ They hope to make the rooms more relaxing and friendly, which has been shown to help with post-stroke recovery.

Catherine said: โ€œIโ€™ve never completed a half marathon before, and weโ€™ve been training very hard.

โ€œWeโ€™re determined to raise as much money as we can for the Charity, which will help us to support the patients in our care on the Stroke Unit.โ€

A study day brought together therapists and doctors working with children with complex upper limb issues.

The Complex Paediatric Upper Limb Service provides highly specialised support for children and young people with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, who experience functional difficulties using their upper limbs.

๐Ÿคš The service is led by Mr Marcos Katchburian, an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hand surgery and paediatric orthopaedics, who children with a range of orthopaedic conditions, helping improve their ability to use their hands.

A key member of the service is Heidi Furr, a senior paediatric occupational therapist with extensive experience in motor disorders such as cerebral palsy.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Together, they developed and ran a study day to bring together occupational therapists, doctors and physiotherapists from across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

The day included practical sessions on ultrasound anatomy, the use of botulinum toxin in upper limb cerebral palsy, surgical interventions and hand therapy.

๐ŸŽจ Heidi Furr commented on the positive feedback the day received, adding: โ€œThere was great feedback about the interactive anatomy lectures involving body paint and using ultrasound machines to locate and identify muscles of the arm and hand.โ€

In 1986, 12 student nurses began training at what was then the Maidstone School of Nursing in Barming.

After qualifying in 1989, their careers spread across community nursing, dementia care, cardiology, midwifery, neurorehabilitation, bloodborne viruses and practice development.

Forty years later, eight of them - including Bank Staff Nurse, Nicola Henthorn - reunited to reminisce, share memories and remember absent friends.

Five are still working in the NHS, and all acknowledged the impact of their training in Maidstone, and the knowledge, skills and experience that set up their careers and changed their lives.

Nicola said: "Training and living together meant we had, and still have, a special bond.

"It was emotional to come together four decades later and remember those we worked with and the people we have lost over the years, including Clare Montague, a dedicated tutor and remarkable human who left a place in each of our hearts.โ€

Today is , marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau, the largest N**i death camp.

On this day, we remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, along with the millions of others persecuted and killed by the N**is.

We also reflect on those who lost their lives in recent genocides recognised by the UK government, including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur, and the Yazidi genocide.

The theme for this year, Bridging Generations, is a reminder the responsibility of remembrance does not end with survivors - it lives on through all of us.

May remembrance strengthen our resolve not only to remember the past, but to protect the future.

๐ŸŽ“ Congratulations to Rekha Brijmohan, Ward Manager for the Short Stay Surgery Unit and Admissions Lounge at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, who has graduated from Arden University with an MBA!

Asked how the course has benefited her work, she explained how it has been about improving outcomes for patients, supporting clinicians, and working smarter.

Balancing work and studies alongside the pace of a busy surgical service was a challenge, but Rekha says: โ€œThe course has changed how I see my role, from managing immediate pressures to understanding the wider systems that influence decision-making.

โ€œItโ€™s pushed me to think critically, not just in my department and in the NHS, but more broadly.

"By strengthening communication, decision-making, and team confidence, our patients experience fewer delays, less uncertainty, and a smoother journey through their care.โ€

Congratulations Rekha, we're so proud of your achievement! ๐Ÿ‘

Before any planned surgery, pre-operative assessments make sure patients are ready for their procedure.

Weโ€™re changing how we do these, and youโ€™ll now get a health questionnaire by email.

Make sure we have your email address, and that you complete the questionnaire when it arrives in your inbox. Your answers will help us decide if you need any further tests.

For some patients, this will save a trip to hospital, or mean a shorter appointment.

This means we can see more people and make sure you are ready for your procedure, which can help improve your recovery.

If you need help to access the questionnaire, call the number on your appointment letter.

As the BBC spent today looking at the NHS across England, BBC Kent Health Correspondent, Mark Norman joined our teams in the busy Emergency Department at Maidstone Hospital.

He joined the huddle at the nurses' station at 8am, spoke to patients in Majors, met Emergency Medicine Consultant, Dr Sahaj Sethi and spent time with Deputy Chief of Service, Dr Nick Bagley during his shift seeing patients in the department.

He also visited our Care Coordination Centre to find out how our electronic bed management system helps make sure patients get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

We can't praise our Emergency Department teams enough for their incredible work! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Look out for our teams on BBC South East Today this evening from 6.30pm where Mark will be broadcasting live.

๐Ÿค–A state-of-the-art surgical robot has helped a team at Maidstone Hospital carry out 40% more gallbladder operations in a day!

๐Ÿฅ‡ In a first for a Kent hospital, the surgical team led by Consultant UGI and Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Matyas Fehervari completed the record number of surgeries as part of a high intensity theatre (HIT) list using our of our two surgical robots.

The procedure, known as a cholecystectomy, is traditionally carried out with keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, which usually means 5๏ธโƒฃ operations can be done in a day.

Robot-assisted surgery, using small incisions, surgical instruments and a camera, meant the team could operate efficiently and safely on 7๏ธโƒฃ patients, all able to go home the same day.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ The robot is controlled by the surgeon and gives them greater precision, so complex procedures can be performed with smaller incisions, meaning reduced pain and blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

Mr Fehervari described the โ€œconsistent precisionโ€ of the robot, which means the surgeon can operate more comfortably, maximising the time they can spend operating.

๐Ÿ™Œ Teamwork and coordination made a big difference, with Mr Fehervari explaining how the โ€œtheatre staff, nurses, and anaesthetic colleagues worked extremely well together.

โ€œEveryone knew what they were doing, supported each other, and kept things moving properly. Iโ€™m genuinely very grateful to the whole teamโ€.

Congratulations to Mr Fehervari and his team on their incredible work! ๐Ÿ‘
