Most people know Roald Dahl for his unforgettable stories - but far fewer know about his remarkable contribution to brain injury support.

Dahl was a survivor, and an advocate and innovator in the progression of neurorehabilitation and brain injury care.

His story is a reminder that compassion, collaboration and determination can change the future of neurorehabilitation...and just about anything else.

💡 Did you know this part of Dahl’s history? Tell us in the comments.

“Recovery isn’t about going back — it’s about moving forward with strength.” 💪

For Disability History Month, we’re celebrating the resilience within our community with a success story from our Independent Living Training programme.

Meet Glen (name changed for privacy), a determined 29-year-old whose life changed after a traumatic brain injury sustained in a road traffic accident. Despite a long gap in support, he held onto one goal: to live more independently.

When Glen joined our ILT programme, he worked closely with our team, his family, and his MDT to rebuild key skills for safe, confident living.

Over the months, he achieved major milestones:

• Significant improvement in extended activities of daily living
• A reduction in impulsivity and stronger financial safety skills
• Improved sleep and fatigue management
• Successful use of a seizure monitor to increase safety
• Greater independence with problem solving and daily structure

These wins weren’t overnight. They came from consistency, structure, the right environment - and Glen’s incredible determination.

We’re endlessly proud of his progress.

We had an incredible day at on Thursday!🧠

Thank you to and all sponsors and speakers for putting on such a special event.

In particular, it was wonderful to see the depth of coverage of discussions across many challenging topics - all of which are integral to the support we provide in , and driving forward excellence.

Our BIS representatives included not only management but some of our excellent CRA's - providing a day of deeper learning and integration for all.

Roll on next year!

Today, we pause to honour every trans life lost to violence, discrimination and the silent struggles of mental health.

Trans Day of Remembrance is not just a moment of reflection, it's a call to action.

In the brain injury and rehabilitation community, we’re acutely aware of how stigma, trauma and exclusion can impact a person’s mental health, safety, and access to care.

For many trans people, these challenges remain life-threatening.

At BIS Services, we believe that affirming, inclusive, trauma-informed rehabilitation saves lives.

No one should ever have to fear seeking support.

No one should ever lose their life because kindness, safety, and dignity were withheld.

Today we remember.

Tomorrow we continue fighting for a world where every trans person can live safely, openly, and with the support they deserve.

🤍 We honour them. We hold space. We recommit to doing better.

Many family members supporting someone with a brain injury don’t realise that they are carers....and that they therefore have rights.

❗Carers have many rights, but here are 5 key rights we think every carer should know:

The right to an assessment → helps identify cognitive support needs.

The right to training → crucial when supporting executive dysfunction.

The right to respite → reduces carer fatigue and improves consistency.

The right to involvement → ensures continuity across MDTs & best interests.

The right to information → empowers carers to advocate effectively.

For more information about carers rights, and how to exercise them, visit www.carersuk.org

Men are 1.6x more likely to be admitted to hospital with a head injury in the UK — yet many men still struggle to ask for help or talk openly about their recovery.

On International Men’s Day, we’re shining a light on the hidden realities of brain injury in men — the risks, the stigma, and the emotional weight that often goes unseen.

At BIS Services, we support men every day who are rebuilding their independence, learning new strategies, adapting to change, and finding strength in asking for support.

Today is a reminder that:
💬 Men deserve safe spaces to talk
🧠 Brain injury affects mental health as well as cognition
🤝 Recovery is stronger with community behind it

To all the men on this journey — your resilience matters, your wellbeing matters, and you’re not alone.

What’s one thing someone did that made your recovery (or someone you love) just a little bit easier? 💬

In brain injury rehabilitation, community support can be life-changing.
From helping with memory strategies…
to giving lifts to appointments…
to simply being patient on the hard days -
these everyday acts form the backbone of recovery.

At BIS Services, we see it every day:
✨ progress accelerates when you feel supported
✨ confidence grows when someone believes in you
✨ independence builds when guidance is consistent
✨ motivation increases when you have others to spur you on

Whether it’s family, friends, CRAs, therapists, pets, neighbours or anyone else,
community is the quiet force behind every milestone.

💛 Tag someone who has been part of your support system.
Let’s celebrate the people who help make recovery that bit easier.

As Disability History Month begins, we pause to recognise the countless individuals whose lived experiences, resilience and advocacy have transformed how society understands disability.

There is still a long way to go to building a future where every person’s strengths, needs and story are understood, but their journeys made today’s advancements and person-centred, compassionate rehabilitation possible.

We honour the past as we keep working toward a world that empowers every person to thrive.💪🤝

Cognitive rehabilitation doesn’t just happen when you're with your support team or clinicians - it happens in kitchens, notebooks, quiet moments and the everyday things at home.

💡Here are 5 simple ways to support your recovery (or the recovery of someone you support) every day.

Recovery isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about creating habits that make life feel more manageable, step by step.

💬 Which of these strategies do you use most often — or find hardest to stick to?

Its 🧠🎓

Today we’re celebrating a role that sits at the heart of everything we do:
our Cognitive Rehabilitation Assistants (CRAs).

CRAs work directly with people living with brain injuries — supporting memory, planning, attention, emotional regulation, and so much more. Their work blends psychology, rehabilitation, and real-world problem solving, all delivered with patience, creativity, and compassion.

CRAs are so much more than just carers or support workers - they play a key role in:

🧠 Implementing cognitive strategies tailored to each client
🎯 Supporting goal-setting and meaningful daily routines
📝 Providing structured, accurate session reporting
🤝 Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
💬 Building therapeutic relationships based on trust, empathy, and empowerment
📈 Supporting emotional regulation, executive functioning, and daily living skills
🏡 Delivering rehabilitation where it matters most — in real environments, real routines, and real life

Happy Psychological Professions Week!

In brain injury rehabilitation, kindness is more than a value, it’s a practice. It’s the foundation of trust, progress, and recovery.

Kindness is empowerment.
It’s encouragement after a setback.
It’s reminding someone to take a break, and ensuring they do.
It's knowing when you need to take a break yourself.
It’s patience when words don’t come easily or tasks are slow.
It’s showing up, every single day.

Kindness is respect and understanding.
It’s listening without judgment, and adapting when plans need to change.
It’s integrating with families and support networks.
It's learning about cultures and beliefs, respecting and celebrating them.
It’s creativity in approach and dedication in action.

Kindness is accurate reporting, clear communication, and professional integrity.
It’s advocating for the best outcomes and never settling for less.
It’s maintaining boundaries, even when it’s hard.
It’s learning not to take behaviour personally, and truly seeing the person behind it.

In , kindness isn’t just compassion, it’s a clinical tool, it's the common language of excellent support. It builds connection, motivation, and the confidence to rebuild a life.

Happy to all the incredible and dedicated clinicians, support and care workers who embody kindness every day.🤍

What a fantastic week our team had in Chicago for the ACRM | American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine annual Conference!🧠

Kicking the week off with two days of formal Cognitive Rehabilitation training and Paediatric training, our BIS representatives had an opportunity to refresh their knowledge before the conference opened.

It was inspiring to spend the days immersed in new research, spanning brain & spinal injury, brain health, RTSS and the latest tech innovations. Our team returns with so much exciting knowledge for us to take forward to our clients, pass to MDT members and to further enrich into our Cognitive Rehab Assistant training packages at BIS Services.
