Relationships can change after brain injury, and that experience looks different for everyone.

For some, it can feel harder to keep up with social circles, stay connected, or be understood in the same way as before. Some may drift from old friends or relationships as things change in their life.

For others, relationships may grow stronger, with deeper support, understanding, and connection. You might make new friends who have been through a similar experience.

There’s no one “right” experience, and no single way relationships should look. After a brain injury, it is important to simply be surrounded by people who love and support you, and acknowledge the ways in which you may have changed.

💬 We’d love to hear from you- how have your relationships changed since your brain injury?

We’re really pleased to share some of the fantastic feedback we’ve received for our podcast, BIScussions.

⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐

For BIS Services, this podcast is our way of opening the doors a little wider, offering a behind-the-scenes look at neurorehabilitation, alongside honest discussions, clinical insights, and perspectives from both our team and the wider industry. We firmly believe that, together, we can raise the standard.

Hearing how positively BIScussions has already been received has been genuinely encouraging. It reinforces a principle we really believe in - that there is real value in sharing knowledge, challenging thinking, and making neurorehab more accessible and understood beyond clinical settings.

If you haven’t listened yet, we’d love for you to join the conversation. Whether you’re working in the field, supporting someone with a brain injury, or simply interested in how rehabilitation really works, BIScussions is designed to inform, reflect, and spark discussion.

We’ll be continuing to share episodes, insights, and guest perspectives over the coming months... and we’re just getting started!

In the BIS Service office, we have a large piece of brain coral on display, serving as a reminder of how life thrives through adaptation.

Brain coral grows slowly, but constantly adjusts its structure in response to its environment, shaping itself around currents, light, and pressure to survive and endure. The human brain works in a remarkably similar way.

Through Neuroplasticity, the brain is able to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. After brain injury, illness, or trauma, this ability becomes especially important, forming the foundation of rehabilitation and recovery.

Just like coral doesn’t grow in isolation from its environment, brain injury recovery is shaped by environment, experience, approach, repetition, support, and time.

At BIS Services, our work is built on this principle of adaptation, helping our clients rebuild, rewire, and reconnect through the right environments and approaches for each individual.

Like brain coral, the brain is resilient, responsive, and always capable of change.

We know that brain injury recovery looks different for everyone, and the journey is not linear.

For some, a good day might be as simple as feeling able to get out of bed. For others, it might be being able to socialise, work or remember an appointment.

What does a 'good day' look like for you since your brain injury?

The small wins matter just as much as the big ones! ⭐️

Today is Earth Day 🌱

At BIS Services, delivering cognitive rehabilitation in real-world, home environments is at the heart of what we do. This often means travel is unavoidable, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take responsibility for our impact.

We are committed to reducing and offsetting our carbon footprint wherever possible, and we’re proud to share the difference we’ve made so far:

🌳6970 Trees funded

💨667.94 †CO2e avoided

Every step towards sustainability matters. As a service built around supporting people in their everyday lives, we believe it’s just as important to protect the environments we’re all part of.

Independent Living Trials (ILTs) provide the ideal environment for positive risk taking, helping to bridge the gap between intensive rehabilitation support and real-world independence.

Whether regaining confidence in affected skills, or for young adults learning life skills for the first time, a safe, structured and supported environment is crucial to foster independence, and allow individuals to lead a fulfilling life after brain injury.

In our latest BIScussions episode, we discuss ILTs in more detail - their importance, challenges, benefits and our approach at BIS Services.

📣 NEW EPISODE OUT NOW! 📣

🎧 BIScussions Episode 5: Inside Independent Living Trials: A Journey with the BIS Team

In the latest BIScussions episode, Natalie and Eky are joined by Cameron McIntosh, BIS Services’ ILT coordinator, to explore Independent Living Trials (ILTs) for individuals after brain injury.

Here’s what they cover:

- What ILTs are, how BIS runs them, and the challenges involved (staffing, evidence, practicalities).

-Why ILTs provide a safe environment for positive risk-taking, with success defined by evidence rather than perfection.

-The shift from BIS’s “The Link” smart-tech house to offering 12-week ILT Assessments in clients’ own communities.

-BIS’s triphasic approach to fostering independence: building skills, introducing strategies, and then reducing supervision.

-Key barriers like property sourcing, funding delays, recruitment, and the importance of cultural considerations.

If you're interested in innovative brain injury rehab and the evolution of ILTs, this episode is for you!

After a brain injury there is often a lot of focus what you can't do anymore.

Though it bring a lot of change, not all of it is negative. At BIS Services we believe that brain injury shouldn't be framed in terms of loss. The rehabilitation journey is an adjustment to a new self, and it is important to focus on the positives and small wins.

💬What is one positive thing that has changed since your brain injury?
