Standing Steady: Straight Legs & Support
7th February, 12:30-13:45

This class is centred on standing poses, offering a focused and methodical exploration of how to build strength, stability, and clarity in the legs and feet. Aimed at beginners, the practice will move slowly and with attention, allowing time to understand the correct actions and alignments within each posture.
Particular emphasis is placed on working with straight legs, observing the actions of lifting, grounding, and balancing weight evenly through the feet. Students will be guided to refine the placement of the feet, knees, and hips, developing awareness of how these actions support steadiness and ease in standing poses.

Props such as blocks, and chairs will be used to support correct alignment and stability, enabling students to remain in the poses long enough to study and experience their effects. Through careful instruction and repetition, this class aims to build confidence, precision, and a strong foundation for further Iyengar Yoga practice.

19 days of yoga practice starts now...

You can also find structured classes with Lin and Leo in our online video library. Over 120 classes for all levels.

We have shared a beginner video in our recent blog with Lin and Leo, two experienced Iyengar Yoga teachers.

The practice gently introduces key principles of Iyengar Yoga, with clear guidance, steady pacing, and a focus on stability, alignment, and ease. You’ll see how simple actions and the thoughtful use of support can make yoga feel approachable, not intimidating.

Perfect for complete beginners, returners, or anyone feeling unsure about where to begin. It’s also a lovely companion to in-person classes and a confidence-builder as you start (or restart) your practice.

Feeling grounded, steady and energised.

We kicked off the year with the first workshop in our series of specialised three-hour Iyengar Yoga workshops designed to explore Level 2 and Level 3 āsana, prāṇāyāma preparation, and the subtle teachings of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras with our senior Level 3 teacher, Lin Craddock.

Using standing poses, symmetry, and balance to awaken the base (root) energy centre—building strength, stability, and a deep sense of support from the ground up.

Practice Parsvottanasana (Intense side stretch pose)
With hands in Paschima Namaskarasana.

Forward bend. The legs are taken one in front of the other, which gives space for the spine to move. It can be a very useful standing forward bend if you have stiffness in the hamstrings, back or leg muscles.

**If you find your back heel lifting, raise it onto flat support, this will help you to keep it grounded down.**

Tight hamstrings are often associated with a stiff upper back. And we often see in those who come to yoga class with low back pain, the combination of a long spine and tight hamstrings. Stretching the hamstrings will, over a period of time, alleviate these back problems. Yoga also helps to improve posture, tension in the body and stress levels.

NEW Closer Look Sessions for Beginners

The first in our series is 'Building the Foundations of Yoga Practice' on Saturday 17th January 2026. 12:30-13:45.

This pop-up class is suitable for beginners building their practice, as well as students with some experience who wish to return to the foundations.

Iyengar Yoga emphasises learning the basics with care, focusing on alignment, awareness, and steady progress.

This class will be taught at an accessible pace, with postures explored step by step and supported by props such as blocks, belts, and blankets, allowing each student to practice safely and confidently.

Monthly themed pop-up classes will be offered. These are designed to complement regular classes and focus on specific aspects of practice—such as standing poses, restorative practice, or working with particular areas of the body i.e
shoulder awareness.

Questions are encouraged, rest is respected, and there is no pressure to achieve poses. By returning to the basics, we build strong foundations for clarity, confidence, and growth in practice.

Vedic chanting is one of the oldest ways that yoga has been passed down – originally not through books, but through sound. It’s simple, rhythmic, and be “good at Sanskrit” or have a perfect voice. All you need is a willingness to listen, repeat, and let the sound settle in. Many people surprisingly calming, like meditation in motion – the words carry you, and your mind starts to quieten.
Join our Vedic Chanting Course groups on:
Thursday evenings (online): Level I – 6:00pm
5 week course - £75
No experience needed — just bring your voice and curiosity.
To enrol, simply register via our website: www.iyengar-yoga.co.uk

Vedic chanting is for anyone who loves yoga and wants to explore its roots in sound. You don’t need to be a singer, or have studied Sanskrit before. Beginners are very welcome in Level I, where we take things step by step.

Chanting can support teachers, practitioners, and complete newcomers alike — it’s a practice that steadies the mind, opens the breath, and connects you to the living tradition of yoga.
