Osteopathy — isn’t that just for backs?

Back pain is a common reason people come to see us, but osteopathy isn’t limited to the spine.

It focuses on how the body moves as a whole; how the joints, muscles and surrounding tissues are working together.

That can include neck pain, shoulder problems, headaches, sports injuries and nerve-related pain such as sciatica.

Often the area that hurts isn’t the only area involved.

⚠️A shoulder issue may relate to the upper back.
⚠️Ongoing knee pain can be influenced by the hips.
Often, the area that hurts isn’t the only area involved.e neck.

That’s why assessment matters.

We’re not just looking at where it hurts; we’re looking at what may be contributing to it.

If you’re unsure whether osteopathy is appropriate for your issue, you’re welcome to start with a quick call and we’ll guide you properly.

Treatment isn’t one size fits all.

Two people can walk in with what sounds like the same problem; lower back pain, shoulder discomfort, even sciatica and the underlying cause can be completely different.

One might be joint restriction. Another might be muscular overload.
Someone else might have nerve irritation contributing to it.

If you treat all three the same way, one may improve… and the others won’t.

That’s why we assess first.

We look at how you move, where the restriction is, what’s actually driving the symptoms and then tailor treatment accordingly.

✅Hands-on treatment is adapted to you.
✅Rehabilitation advice is specific to you.
✅Even recovery timelines differ.

Because the aim isn’t just temporary relief.

It’s resolving the issue properly.

If you’re unsure what’s driving your symptoms, that’s exactly what we’re here to work out.

Woke up with a pain in the neck again?

A lot of people assume it must be their pillow or the way they slept.

Sometimes that plays a part.

But if you’re waking up stiff regularly, or the discomfort keeps returning, it’s often coming from the neck itself.

The small joints and muscles at the top of the neck sit just beneath the base of the skull. When movement there becomes restricted, the surrounding muscles tighten and the neck starts to feel stiff and uncomfortable, particularly first thing in the morning.

Changing pillows won’t normally resolve that.

That’s why proper assessment matters.

If you don’t address what’s actually driving it, the pattern tends to repeat.

The key is identifying whether the issue is joint restriction, muscle tension, or a combination of both.

If you’re unsure what’s causing your neck pain, that’s exactly what we assess here at the clinic.

If you’d like advice, start with a quick call and we’ll guide you properly.

Not all leg pain is sciatica.

A lot of people assume that if pain travels into the leg, it must be the sciatic nerve.

But that isn’t always the case.

True sciatica usually involves irritation of the sciatic nerve in the lower back.

Pain often travels from the back into the buttock, down the back of the leg and sometimes into the calf or foot. You might also notice tingling, numbness, or altered sensation.

However, joint restriction in the lower back or tight muscles around the pelvis can create very similar symptoms.

That’s why proper assessment matters.

If you treat muscle tightness when the issue is nerve irritation or assume it’s a disc when it isn’t, symptoms tend to keep returning.

The key is identifying what’s actually driving it.

If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing is sciatica or something else, that’s exactly what we assess here at the clinic.

If you’d like advice, start with a quick call, and we’ll guide you properly.

April is Stress Awareness Month.

Many people we see wouldn’t say they’re stressed.

They’ll mention a neck that hasn’t settled or that their shoulders feel tight most evenings or headaches are becoming more frequent.

When we talk it through, it’s often down to working long hours. Poor sleep. Not properly switching off, which the body absorbs.

Gradually, the muscles don’t fully relax, breathing becomes less efficient, and movement through the neck and upper back reduces, which can lead to ongoing discomfort.

It doesn’t usually mean anything serious. But it does mean the body may need some attention.

If that sounds familiar, we see this regularly here at our clinic in Bearsted.

If you’re unsure what to do next, start with a quick call and we’ll advise you properly.

Pregnancy brings a lot of changes and sometimes that includes persistent back or pelvic discomfort.

As your body adapts, ligaments soften, posture shifts and pressure through the pelvis increases. For many women, that means aching across the lower back, discomfort walking, or difficulty turning in bed at night.

It’s common but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with it.

Gentle osteopathic treatment during pregnancy is tailored to support your body safely. The aim is to improve movement, reduce tension and help you feel more comfortable as you approach your due date.

Our Pregnancy Support Package offers structured care through the final weeks and into early motherhood, including:

Three treatments before birth

A half-price postnatal check for mum

A free osteopathic assessment for your baby

If you’re in Maidstone, Bearsted or the surrounding Kent area and would like more information, feel free to message the clinic. We’re always happy to help. 💛

Does your back pain feel like it keeps bringing you back to square one?

It settles, then it starts to feel normal again, so you get on with work, exercise, and daily life.

Then a few weeks later… it’s back.

Recurring back pain is rarely random. In many cases, there is an underlying mechanical restriction that hasn’t fully resolved. When part of the spine isn’t moving properly, surrounding muscles tighten to compensate. Symptoms improve temporarily, but if the cause remains, the pain often returns.

Instead of repeatedly managing flare-ups, it can be helpful to understand what is driving the problem in the first place.

At Scott Osteopathic & Health Clinic, every assessment is focused on identifying the root cause, not just easing the current episode.

97% of patients report feeling improvement within their first two treatments.

If you’re tired of the cycle of “better… then back again,” we’re here to help.
