👩⚕️The stigma attached to ADHD has massively shifted over the past few years...
Not in a good way sadly, despite there being more awareness and understanding of how ADHD can present in adults, females and those who didn't display typical ADHD traits in childhood.
👩⚕️The stigma used to be that a individual with ADHD presents as chaotic, hyperactive, behavioural problems, unable to complete education or hold down a job.......
👩⚕️Which research tells us this is not the case for everyone as there are so many other factors that influence a persons symptoms and that impairment caused by ADHD varies massively from person to person and can fluctuate throughout a persons life.
🧐The stigma has now shifted to an assumption that 'everyone is seeking a diagnosis of ADHD', looking for an excuse for their behaviours, or find the diagnosis 'trendy'. Many completely dismissing ADHD as a 'made up' diagnosis, despite the extensive research that has evidenced the presence of ADHD dating as far back to 1775 😮
😞This is lead to ADHD not being taken seriously and completely invalidating the challenges people with ADHD are faced with, including health inequalities, higher risk of mortality and vulnerability to mental health problems.
💜I meet people on a regular basis that share their stories, their life long challenges, the confusion & distress its caused not having any answers, feeling completely inadequate and feeling like that don't fit in this world. Believe me ADHD is very real & can be so detrimental to a persons life.
