This optical illusion is called a retinal afterimage. When you stare at an image for a while, the cells in your retina that detect colour become overstimulated and “tired.” When you look away, you briefly see the opposite colours - almost like a photographic negative - until your eyes reset.
Our eyes are truly incredible at processing light and colour, and little demonstrations like this remind us just how fascinating vision science can be!
