Today I officiated at a celebration of life service for a lady who was 103 years young. She was known for her love of owls, so it was only fitting she had a floral tribute in the shape of one. I hope she is now flying high and enjoying the sunshine 🦉

As well as being a funeral celebrant, I am also involved with care work.

This is M. I started working for her 7 years ago as an extension of herself. I was there to do the things she physically couldn't do anymore. Over the years, we have changed from employer/employee to being such good friends. I am still an extension of her, but after all this time, I know exactly what needs to be done and more importantly, the way she likes it done! M has various medical needs including MS but we always have fun together. The highlight of my week was finding a way Maureen could knit again! M has amazed herself in achieving this, as she has very limited use of her right hand and no use in her left. I am so proud of her ❤️

Before Christmas I was extremely privileged to be asked to lead a celebration of life service for a gentleman that was a member of a folk band. In the true style of his band, many of us dressed in black and red. The music choices were songs he enjoyed playing, including 'The Hole in the Elephants Bottom'. We had his musical friends play him in with live music, and a fantastic accordion player delivered a rousing rendition of 'My Fathers a Lavatory Cleaner'.
The service was filmed and is available on YouTube

This service was a wonderful example what a true celebration of life can be. Love music, unique and personal with everyone joining in. His daughter even made a beautiful floral tribute in the shape of an accordion 🪗

Permission has been given by the family to use images and video link. Service was held at Maldon Fields

I was extremely honoured today to lead the Day of Dedication service at the Woodland Glades in Maldon Cemetery. This is an annual service where the families who have buried loved ones within the last year in the Woodland Glades are invited to plant trees and bulbs which will thrive and support the wildlife in this beautiful natural burial area.

The ceremony is usually in December, but due to the storms we had on the original date, it was rescheduled for today. The trees had already been planted, so today families were invited to write messages to their loved ones on wooden shapes to hang in the trees. This was truly appreciated by many, especially by the children who joined us as they enjoyed colouring their shapes in beautiful patterns.

Thank you to the Cemeteries and Bereavement Services Department of Maldon District Council for inviting me today and for providing this service for the people of Maldon.

With so many advertisements everywhere regarding direct cremations, how do you decide what is right for you or your loved ones?
The main difference is that many of the nationwide firms offering direct cremations are purely seeing this as a business. In many cases, you would not receive the personal touch you could rely on from a local funeral director - most if not all of these offer either direct cremations or attended cremations.
So what is the difference between direct, attended or traditional cremations?
Direct cremations means no service and no-one in attendance.
Attended cremations usually means a small number of people (usually a maximum of 10) can attend the crematorium. There is no service, but sometimes music can be played or a short blessing can be given, usually by the funeral director.
Normal cremation - you can have as many people attend as the crematorium can accommodate. A choice of service - religious with a member of the clergy or a non religious/some religious elements personalised ceremony officiated by a celebrant. Adding an Order of Service, meaningful music or flowers can all add to a personal send off. More importantly, it's a time when family and friends can gather to say goodbye to their loved one and support each other in grief.
Some people who opt for a direct cremation can feel like they have not had the chance to accept the reality of the passing of their loved one. They have not had the chance to say their goodbyes. You could always have a memorial service after the cremation with friends and family so you still have the chance to grieve together. It's a very personal choice - if I can support you in anyway, I would be honoured ❤️

It's been a chilly start to the year! Last week I was fortunate to officiate at a service which was held at beautiful Maldon Fields before the burial at Woodland Glades. It was an extremely cold, frosty day but beautiful, with bright sunshine. There was even a robin at the cemetery, hopping along in the trees nearby.

By holding the service at Maldon Fields crematorium, the family were able to have the music and content they wanted, with an intimate committal at the graveside where their loved one was returned to nature. If a church service is not for you, this is a practical option which we are fortunate to be able to access ❤️

Wishing everyone a peaceful and happy Christmas 🎄

Thinking of all those that are preparing for Christmas without a loved one. Special thoughts for all the families I have been privileged to help this year.

Best wishes to all, from myself and Santa (my dad!) ❤️

Born in Maldon, I have continued to live here most of my life. I briefly moved away, but Maldon always calls me home. I am lucky enough to live near the beautiful Promenade Park where I walk my dog every day.

This park is never the same from day to day. The weather seems to be unique to the park itself; in a single walk, one end may be blustery and cold, whilst the other is calm. The same familiar faces greet each other, but there is also a cheery good morning for a stranger.

My daily walk is much like life, with a mix of unexpected and familiar events. Even if I'm alone and do not see anyone I know, I still feel the warmth of the park embracing me. It helps to ground me, setting me up for whatever is in store for me that day.

Even though I am The Maldon Celebrant, my work takes me all over Essex, so please feel free to contact me. Together we can personalise a beautiful service ⭐

On Saturday, I had the absolute honour to officiate at the memorial service for such a wonderful family. The funeral was a direct cremation 18 months ago, leaving the family with no closure or chance to grieve together. This changed on Saturday. The service was held in a function room with family gathered from near and far. We had tears and laughter, followed by a toast to their loved one. It was more informal then a traditional service and also more intimate. The chapter is now complete, and hopefully they will now be able to move forward in peace.
