I'd already been working on my pelvic floor symptoms and prolapse for 2 years (3 pelvic health physiotherapists, 2 gynae's, 3 different pessaries, and craniosacral therapy). I was desperate with constant pop symptoms.

It wasn't until I tried hypopressives that my symptoms really started to reduce, and I was able to enjoy moving my body again.

After such a traumatic time, hypopressives gave me the confidence to have another baby - I knew I had the tools to suppory my pelvic floor going through it all again. And what a difference it made!

Hypopressive exercise is a full-body approach which works on many different aspects influencing the pelvic floor - simultaneously! So it ends up saving time, it only takes 10 minutes a day.

Pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (PGP or PPGP in short) is very common. We used to think it was mechanical in origin and that pregnancy hormones loosened the pelvic joints, and the pelvis became unstable.

We now know it isn't true. The pelvic joints are the strongest and sturdiest in the whole human body.

So what is causing the pain?

đź’« Low energy levels. Your whole system is using more energy to grow and maintain the baby's life as well as your own, so it uses more energy, leaving you more tired. When energy levels go too low, your body gets stressed and releases stress hormones. We become more sensitive to pain when tired, it's your body's way of forcing us to stop, perhaps?

đź’« Stress/anxiety/fear/threat. Trauma is a big risk factor to PGP. Physical or mental. Whether it's birth trauma, anxiety over finances, problems in relationships, busy and stressful time at work, or fear of the pain, they will all increase your sensitivity to PGP.

đź’« Smoking and obesity both increase the inflammatory state of the body. They are both factors increasing your likelihood of developing PGP.

đź’« The pelvis is more sensitive during pregnancy: there's more blood, swelling, increased monitoring by yourself and healthcare professionals, increased urinary frequency, etc. Everything in this stage of life revolves around the pelvis, so it's understandable that our brains monitor the area more tightly.

So what can you do? I will continue in the next post of the series!

You’ll be relieved to know this isn’t true!

Yes, it’s very effective in reducing symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, but it can have a big impact on other challenges and symptoms of pelvic floor or abdominal issues, even on pelvic pain.

You will probably already have an idea about what I’m about to say: that as we aren’t only and simply working with the pelvic floor, but the whole deep core system and other factors around and affecting them, we can and will make a difference elsewhere too and not just to the pelvic floor!

Incontinence, urinary frequency and urgency, even diastasis recti, are symptoms within the same complex and so can be positively affected by this technique if practiced correctly. They are part of the same complex but symptoms of a “dysfunction” in different part of that same complex.

So working with these consists of looking at the same factors, same and similar work and you’ll notice improvements in your core and abdominal function over all!
