If you have ever felt down or irritable before starting your period, you will know that hormones can affect your mood and wellbeing.

Estrogen helps regulate several hormones which have mood-boosting properties for example serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. It also helps the sharpness of your thinking skills and when levels reduce, the resulting ‘brain fog’ can lower your mood.

Progesterone has a calming effect on your mood, as well as aiding sleep and relaxation. And like estrogen, when progesterone levels drop, it can cause a rise in irritability and mood swings.

Testosterone is thought to have important effects on your mental stamina, quality of sleep, clarity of thought and concentration, and mood stability.

When estrogen, progesterone and testosterone fluctuate and fall during perimenopause, the effects on your mental health and wellbeing can be significant and impact on your daily life and those around you.

Although changes to your mood and emotional wellbeing can be very unsettling at times, there are plenty of ways to minimise these symptoms and treatments, helping you feel more like your usual self again.

Domestic violence doesn’t always leave visible scars. Let’s raise awareness for those who silently suffer.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Mental and emotional abuse can be just as damaging as physical violence, and yet it often goes unnoticed. It’s crucial to raise awareness, provide support, and help break the cycle of abuse.

If you or someone you know needs help, don’t hesitate to reach out to local resources. You are not alone; DM me if you need support.

Let's talk about something I'm seeing more of in clinic: addiction.

And it's not always what you might think. It's not just alcohol or drugs, gambling, medication misuse, and behavioural addictions are increasingly common too.

Here are some UK stats that might surprise you:

📊 11% of UK adults have experienced addiction at some point
📊 47% of adults know someone affected by addiction
📊 Only a fraction of the 608,416 alcohol-dependent adults in England get specialist support
📊 2.8% of adults engage in problem gambling, with online platforms fuelling the risk
📊 1 in 6 people have a family member living with addiction

The truth is, addiction often walks hand-in-hand with anxiety, depression, trauma, or loneliness. And whatever form it takes, it deserves compassion, not shame.
If this resonates with you or someone you love, know that support is available. You're not alone in this. 💜

👉🏻 Domestic abuse doesn’t always leave bruises, sometimes it hides in silence, fear, or control.

This October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on an issue that affects over 2.3 million people every year in the UK.

Too often, abuse happens behind closed doors or is dismissed as a “private matter.”
But everyone deserves to feel safe, in their home, in their relationship, and in their own mind.

Change is happening. With greater awareness and new laws like the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, support for victims, children, and even pets is growing.

Still, stigma and silence remain powerful barriers, and that’s why awareness matters more than ever. 💜

If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that help is available, you are not alone, and you do deserve safety and peace.

💜 If you need a safe space to talk, please reach out, there’s support waiting for you.

How much time does that voice in your head criticise you?

I wonder what you could achieve if we made that voice your biggest cheer leader instead of your harshest critic.

Well I can help you to do that if you find yourself being the biggest critic of you.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental health and breaking down the stigma around it.

As a therapist, I want to emphasise that you are not alone in your struggles, and there is no shame in reaching out for help.

Mental health challenges affect millions of people worldwide, and they don't discriminate based on age, gender, or background. We all face times when life feels overwhelming, and that's okay. It's essential to remember that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Reach out to a friend, family member, or professional like myself when you need someone to talk to. You don't have to go through difficult times alone. There are people who care about your wellbeing and are ready to offer a listening ear or professional guidance.

Healing begins when we open up, share our thoughts and feelings, and work towards better mental health together. Whether it's through therapy, counseling, or simply confiding in a loved one, there are numerous avenues for support and healing.

Please remember that self-care is crucial. Take time for yourself, prioritise your mental health, and practice self-compassion. It's not selfish; it's self-preservation.

Let's work together to create a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. Let's break the stigma and foster a culture of understanding, empathy, and support.

Stress or Anxiety? Understanding the Difference Matters.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed lately, you might be wondering whether you're dealing with stress or anxiety, and why it even matters.

Here's the key difference:
Stress is typically short-term and tied to a specific situation. Think work deadlines, family conflict, or financial pressure. Once the situation resolves, stress usually fades too.

Anxiety, however, tends to stick around. It's that nagging worry or sense of dread that lingers even when there's no obvious stressor. It can disrupt your sleep, your relationships, and your daily life, even when everything "should" be fine.

The good news? Both stress and anxiety can be effectively managed. Sometimes relaxation techniques and lifestyle changes are enough. Other times, working with a therapist or hypnotherapist can help you get to the root of what's keeping you stuck.
You don't have to navigate this alone. If you're unsure what you're experiencing or how to move forward, I'm here to help.

It’s National Bathtub Day, and honestly, who doesn’t love an excuse for a long soak?

For me, hopping in the bath is one of the simplest and most soothing ways to unwind and let the day melt away. The warm water, the quiet, the time to breathe, it’s a little act of self-care that makes a big difference for your mind and body.

Stress has a way of building up without us even realising it, so taking just 20 minutes to pause, relax and switch off can do wonders for your wellbeing.

I’d love to know, what do you do to de-stress at the end of the day? Share your favourite unwind ritual below 👇

(And if you’re feeling frazzled lately, maybe tonight’s the night to run that bath 🛁

For all my new followers ... 👋🏻 I’m Denise Little, a mum, dog mum & a therapist based in Malmesbury. My background was in teaching before becoming a therapist over 10 years ago. I love to drink coffee & read a good trashy novel. I love to travel & a walk on a beach.

Before you work with me one to one you’re probably going to want to know something about me and rightly so.

There are lots of therapists out there, offering all sorts of help and I want you to know that you’ve found the right support before you decide to work with me.

Now I could give you a long list of the training I’ve completed and the letters I have after my name but I know that’s not what you want to know.

You want to know that you can talk to me, open up about how you’re feeling, and know you’re in a safe place and I want you to know that you can and you are.

However we work together you have my help and support to get you to where you want to be, living a life you love.

I’m not just going to sit and nod my head while you talk, I don’t want to unpick your past or even make you cry (although you can because tears are sometimes needed).

I will be real, probably be wearing colourful Doc. Martins and I will try to make you smile as we go through this mind reset together, because, it’s okay to laugh and smile while you heal and transform.

So if get to work with you in the future you now know a little bit about me.

If you already know me, let me know in the comments below how we met 👇🏻💕
