With lush spring grass returning, horses can be at higher risk of laminitis. Even horses that look healthy can be affected. Early prevention is key: manage grazing, monitor your horse’s weight and speak to your vet about tailored plans to help
keep them safe.

As the days get longer and your horse enjoys more time outside, it’s tempting to let them spend hours on pasture straight away. But sudden increases in turnout can put them at risk of injury, overexertion, or digestive upset.

✅Introduce extra turnout gradually – start with shorter periods and slowly build up.
✅Monitor your horse closely – look for signs of stiffness, soreness, or changes in appetite.
✅Adjust feeding and exercise routines –their body needs time to adapt to increased activity.

Every horse is different! Ask us for tailored advice to help keep yours safe, happy and thriving!

Using out-of-date medications may seem harmless, but it can be risky for your horse:
* Reduced effectiveness: The medicine may not work as intended, leaving your horse unprotected or untreated.
* Potential safety issues: Chemical changes over time can make some medications unsafe.
* Hidden risks: Expired products may promote antibiotic resistance or worsen conditions.

Always check expiry dates and dispose of old medications safely. Your vet can advise on proper replacement and storage to keep your horse healthy

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV): Stay Vigilant

There are still cases of EHV in the UK, making awareness and prevention more important than ever. This highly contagious virus can cause respiratory disease, neurological problems, and, in pregnant mares, even abortion. While some horses show mild or no signs, it can spread quickly in yards, competitions, and stables.

If you’re unsure about your horse’s vaccination status or want advice on EHV prevention, we’re here to help.

Regular dental care is key to keeping your horse happy, healthy and performing at their best. But how often should you book a check?
✅Routine checks: Most horses benefit from a dental exam at least once a year.
✅High-risk horses: Young horses, senior horses, or those with performance issues may need checks every 6–12 months.
✅Watch for signs: Difficulty eating, weight loss or head tossing, can indicate it’s time to book sooner.
Your horse can’t tell you when it hurts, but a dental check can!
📆Book your horse’s dental check today.

📣📣 We’ve had some exciting news today, our fantastic diagnostic imaging resident, Owen Fletcher has passed his final examinations, held in Zurich this past week. He has become an EBVS European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (DipECVDI), a rare and highly prized accolade and one which demonstrates the highest level of qualification a vet can attain within a specialist discipline 📣📣

Owen has been at the hospital for several years, beginning as an intern with us, then joining our imaging team working with existing specialist Jonathon Dixon as he completed his 4-year residency, and he now joins the team as a senior clinician continuing to share his expertise to our hospital caseload and referring veterinary surgeons. Please congratulate him on this huge achievement, we’re really proud! 🍾🍾

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 (𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏 𝐅𝐞𝐛 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔)
Boehringer Ingelheim is updating its Care About Cushing’s initiative, which provides free diagnostic testing for Equine Cushing’s (PPID).
What you need to know:
Focused ACTH Testing - FREE
Free annual ACTH lab tests will now be available during these periods only:
• Spring (March–April) – ideal for assessing laminitis risk.
• Autumn (September–October) – when diagnostic accuracy peaks.

Dose Checker Test - FREE
A new 4–6 week post-treatment test will be available to help check medication doses early on.
Continuous Support
The scheme will still offer:
• One free monitoring test per year for diagnosed & treated horses available in Spring or Autumn
• Digital tracking tools
• Educational resources
• Reminder alerts

Horse owners must work with Rainbow Equine Hospital to generate a voucher code for the lab tests. Make sure the voucher is requested before or during your appointment and is submitted alongside the blood sample.

**As always this voucher code only covers the laboratory fees. Visit fees and the cost of taking the sample will be charged**

Macmillan Ride of their Lives 2026

Our receptionist Sabrina Coultas has a one in a lifetime opportunity and is taking part in the Ernest Cooper and Macmillan Ride of their Lives 2026 at York Races this coming June. She has begun her fundraising with a cake morning at the Hospital 🍰

Twelve amateur jockeys will take part in the Ernest Cooper Macmillan Ride of their Lives 2026 on 13 June 2025 at York Racecourse. The charity race is one of the highlights of Macmillan Charity Raceday, the single biggest fundraising event for the charity which has raised over £10m since its inception.
The riders are keen to get their fundraising up and running and galvanise as much support as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support as they embark on a period of intense training over the next six months.
I have spent all my life riding and always had horses. But this year, I am pushing out of my comfort zone to compete in the "Ride of Their Lives" at York Racecourse.
This isn't just about the thrill of the race, it’s about supporting a cause that is very close to my heart. Most of us know someone whose life has been turned upside down by a diagnosis.
Thankfully, I haven’t been directly affected by cancer however I have seen the impact it can have on friends and families. That is why I’m taking part in this race to raise as much money and awareness as possible for this amazing charity.
The current percentage of being diagnosed with cancer is at 43-45%, that is 1 in 2 people, which is why it is imperative to help the support, care, and research to fight this disease.
Every donation makes a difference-
* £10: Could help provide one session of emotional support from a Macmillan Buddy.
* £20: Could help a member of the Cancer Information and Support team deal with a call or web enquiry.
* £30: Could help run the Online Community for an hour, connecting around 80 people affected by cancer.
* £50: Could help pay for a Macmillan Nurse for two hours, providing essential medical, practical, and emotional support.

It’s easy to write off a horse who’s a bit sluggish or reluctant as “lazy,” but sometimes those little changes in behaviour are their way of telling us something’s not quite right.
Watch for subtle signs:
• Ears pinned back or tense expression
• Resistance to turning, picking up canter leads, or going forward
• Changes in eating habits or weight
• Stiffness, uneven gait, or reluctance to work
Tip: Small changes in behaviour can be your first clue to dental, musculoskeletal, or saddle fit issues. Early detection makes treatment easier and keeps your horse comfortable and happy!
If your horse’s “laziness” is new or unusual, don’t ignore it, contact us to rule out discomfort.
