Emotional Neglect in Childhood Undermines Trust in One’s Own Body

A new study highlighted the often-overlooked impact of emotional abuse and neglect on interoception, a key aspect of emotional and physical health.

Their meta-analysis of nearly 4,000 participants shows these forms of maltreatment are linked to a reduced sense of trust in one’s own bodily signals.

Such diminished body trust can interfere with emotion regulation and may increase vulnerability to mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

The study underscores that emotional maltreatment can leave deep, long-term psychological scars despite being less visible than physical or sexual abuse.

The authors call for more awareness, prevention, and sensitivity to children’s emotional needs in both society and mental health care.

Follow-up research is underway to explore these links in adolescents.

👉VOLUNTEER MENTORS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR HEREFORDSHIRE SCHOOLS!!👈
Mentor Link were invited to attend a networking event to showcase our mentoring service to Herefordshire schools.
The event was a huge success, linking with other professionals to work together to reduce absences of Herefordshire young people.
It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with schools and talk about our EBSA project.
Our aim with this project is to provide 1-1 mentoring and therapeutic support at the earliest opportunity where there are issues with school avoidance, based on social and emotional needs, with the long term aim of re-engaging the young person back into school learning.
There is high demand from schools in the Herefordshire area, and to meet this demand we urgently need more Mentors.
