Why does no one really talk about breast screening? 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s a given that we go, but I certainly didn’t know what to expect before I went in July 2024 for a lump. All was fine thankfully, but now I’m turning 50 this month I was invited to go again for my first of 3 yearly checks until I’m 70. 👵🏼

Why? Because our changing oestrogen levels as we age mean we are more at risk breast cancer. 🍑🍑

Why don’t women talk about it more? I can tell you… a mammography isn’t pleasant - stood half naked and ‘handled’ into a huge machine - then feeling like your b***s are being been run over very slowly… I think I prefer a smear! 🚛

But on the plus it doesn’t last long and it is the ONLY gold standard test available. I.e. There is no other test as reliable by medical standards to check breast tissue changes like cancer.

Mmmm 🤔 I wonder if men had to experience the same for testicular cancer, whether there’d be some kind of alternative less invasive test invented by now!?

I was going to write a post about how Nutritional Therapy can help support women with breast cancer, but there are so many different aspects I could focus on... 🌿

Many women, like Rhian, complete breast cancer treatment are told they are in remission and are expected to go back to ‘normal life’ – but in reality it’s never the same as before.

Left with challenging symptoms, usually as a result of the harsh treatments or from the long-term medications that reduce ongoing risk.

The medical system has little to offer these women. No solutions other than perhaps a change in medication or dosage, no emotional support, no signposting, sometimes very outdated views on diet - and on occasion advice that what you eat makes no difference at all! 💊

This is where Nutritional therapy comes into it’s own. Support the person, safely support and work to reduce medication side effects and empower women with knowledge and tools that can help then not just feel better but know they are doing everything they can to prevent it coming back. 💫

Integrative oncology one day will become mainstream. It absolutely should be and it would save the NHS billions. Please share the word to help make a real difference and give hope and direction to these women – as one day it could be you. 💚

**Thank to Rhian for letting me share her story and her real name x **

My mum is 82 and an addict 🚬

She smokes approaching 40 a day (this weeks count) and over half a litre of whisky a week. I am her only carer or visitor. 🥲 The irony…

It breaks me every time I have to go to the shop on an evening to buy her an emergency pack(s) because she’s run out of money. I’ve left her go cold turkey on a few occasions when she’s over-smoked her quota - it results in a state of frenzy, excess whisky and even more frequent toilet accidents. I have to clean up her unsuccessful attempts before the her cleaners come as they refuse to.

Today was one of those days and most Sundays follow a similar routine…Glamorously rubber gloved up scrubbing the bathroom floor, sorting out clothes, washing and medication. 🧺

I’m past angry, I’m sad. My uber cool and always glamorous mum has gone. She can’t remember she went to the shop yesterday to buy another packet although her bank account shows she did. She strongly denies smoking 11 packets in 4-5 days although the empty cartons are in the bin along with whisky bottles.

She has dementia - vascular no doubt from the smoking. Still waiting for a diagnosis but only really to get the right care in place.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I know so many have it worse - some would say she has the right to live her life as she wants, she’s made it to 82 - but as a parent myself would I want my daughter to do this for me?!

Never. 💔

My point is… It might seem harmless now drinking and smoking, rewarding yourself for a hard day or switching off… but just think where this could this lead.

It’s NEVER too late to start making changes, reducing down, keeping yourself in check, making better choices, even just some of the time.

If not for you, do it for your kids!

🎉 Yep, you heard it right – Lift Nutrition & Wellness turns 3 this October.

In some ways it feels like a lifetime, in others just yesterday.

And the 🌻 sunflower? It’s a symbol of strength, resilience, and longevity – qualities that feel especially relevant in wellness. They say the first three years are the hardest, and I can certainly vouch for that.

I’ll admit there’s been plenty of moments where I’ve thought about returning to my old design career. But something always happens to prevent it – a flurry of new bookings, amazing feedback from a client... Almost as if the universe is telling me to carry on.

So here I am, three years in. Growing steadily, maybe not as quickly as I once imagined, but in the way it was always meant to be. 💫

Here’s to the next chapter ✨

Retreat days 3 & 4: Amchara Gozo 🇲🇹

2 days filled with yoga, evening Qi Gong and walks, Camino Island boat trip, a few soakings from a final day of heavy showers and A LOT of liquid food… I think I’ve consumed my body weight in vegetables and fruit 🥒🥑🍉

All delicious and filling but I’m really ready for reintroducing foods today. 😉

💫 Was it worth it?
100% the best self care I could give myself. I’ve lost a few excess pounds and raised my blood pressure (which was extremely low when I arrived - which can be a result of challenged adrenals).

🍁 But more importantly connected with some amazing people, made new friends, switched off, rested and I feel bright and clear headed ready for the coming months.

Thank you for letting me join you . 💚

Same time next year - Who’s coming with me?

🌸 For the first time, World Menopause and Cancer Awareness Day will shine a spotlight on one of the most overlooked gaps in cancer care: treatment-induced menopause.

🌸 Imagine going through cancer treatment... and then facing menopause overnight.

🌸 Hot flushes, sleep loss, joint pain, anxiety – symptoms that can be harder to cope with than the treatment itself. And yet most women are given no plan, no guidance, no support. Many are not even aware what they are going through is menopause-related or what menopause symptoms are.

🌸 This is the reality of treatment-induced menopause.

🌸 As a Nutritional Therapist, I see the difference that nutrition, lifestyle, and compassionate support can make to bring relief, physical & mental strength, and a better quality of life. 💛

🌸 Today is about raising awareness, because too many women are being left behind.

• Menopause support must be embedded into cancer care from the start
• Medical professionals need better training to bridge the gap
• Patients must have safe and effective access to therapies that can help!

🌸 Please share this message so more voices are heard.

🌿 Autumn Reset Time! 🍂

The Autumn Equinox is here on Monday – a gentle reminder to slow down, nourish yourself, and build immunity for the months ahead. I love cosier evenings, autumn colours, cosy jumpers... and I am secretly rejoicing getting my soup maker out again! 🥣✨

Before fully embracing the season, I’ve booked myself a little indulgence: a 4-day retreat at Amchara in Gozo, Malta – juices, smoothies, soups, daily yoga, walking & infra-red sauna. Last year it was research for my Cleanse Retreats & Online Course... this year, it’s a birthday gift to myself ahead of my birthday! I want to feel amazing as I enter my 50th year 🎉

If you can’t make it to join me in Malta, my 3-day Cleanse & Reset online programme brings the retreat to you:

🍵 Science-backed recipes & a flexible meal plan for the weekend

💪 Guidance on adapting the cleanse to your cycle and to how you feel

🌿 Tips to reduce your toxic load with small, sustainable changes

Autumn is a perfect time to start a reset – your body will thank you for it. 💛

Last night was LOTS of pink and butterflies 💕

🦋Totally not my thing in so many ways… but I had a fantastic night raising money for women with and recovering from breast cancer.

🦋 I was especially happy to help celebrate as winners of the Charity Impact Team Award. A charity close to my heart helping support women with secondary breast cancer

🦋And also my lovely friend who was runner up for the Stacey’s Wings of Inspiration award. 😘

🦋And all the other inspiration women and men who work in support of breast cancer to make such a huge difference to those on a cancer journey.

🦋Thank you Sarah for a lovely evening spent with you on your table and for allowing me to chat your ear off
