Thinking about therapy? Don't let fear of the unknow put you off - our Lead Clinician, Dr Jamie Barsky, has shared his insights to help you be prepared for your first session.

Here, he talks about your freedom to choose: "Our clinicians will never force you to stay in therapy or talk about things you don’t want to. Attendance in therapy must be your choice alone. It’s okay to have doubts about whether it will help.

"And it’s completely normal to have moments of not wanting to attend a session. Your Clinician may offer you encouragement and support, but will never make you feel pressured into sessions. It is always your choice whether you come back.

"After you have had your first therapy session, or two, you will have to decide with your Clinician if you want to continue with further work together. If you do, the content of the therapy will depend on what you have agreed to work on and how you both understand the problems you are facing.

"Good luck with your first session - please take that first step towards the change you want to make."

Does fear of judgement put you off asking for help?

Dr Jamie Barsky, our Lead Clinician, has shared his insights into what to expect at your first therapy session and one of his main points is all about judgement (or total lack thereof):

"I want you to know that you will never be judged by one of our Clinicians. We understand that gambling addiction can push people to behaviours outside of their values and morals. And when regretful behaviour occurred, we know that gambling was in control of your choices.

"We know that past or current behaviour does not define us as people. Clinicians might support you to express your regrets and talk about past behaviours (if you feel able to). But they will never judge you."

Does Therapy scare you? It can be a little intimating if you don't know what's coming, so our Lead Clinician has shared his insights to help you be prepared.

Here, he talks about getting to know you:

"The first one or two sessions will be a ‘getting to know you’ opportunity. The Clinician will help you feel at ease and will want to understand what you would like some help with.

"Your Clinician will not rush into supporting change before you have a shared understanding of the main difficulties, the factors that keep the problem going, and what goals you have for the future."

1st therapy session looming?

It may feel scary if you don't know what to expect. So, Dr Jamie Barsky, our Lead Clinician, has shared his insights to help you prepare for it.

His first point is all about your therapist and Jamie says:

"I want to re-assure you that all of the therapists at AnonyMind are highly experienced Psychologists and Psychotherapists. They have all undergone in-depth training to get them to their current positions.

"There are many short counselling and psychotherapy courses out there, and some professionals can even call themselves a ‘Psychologist’, having had almost no experience working with clients.

"We make sure we employ the most well-trained and qualified Clinicians. Most of our Clinicians will have doctorates in Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology. All will have accreditation and regulation with professional bodies to ensure they maintain safe and ethical practices.

"So, please rest assured that you will be meeting with a clinician who has extensive experience helping people to manage difficult emotions and behaviours."

💡Full tips in caption 👇👇👇

1. Choose a time to talk
Choosing a time when you and the other person are not too emotionally charged would be a good starting point. Think about a time when you're both available and not too distracted by the daily stresses of everyday life.

2. Choose your tone
The calmer and quieter you can be in how you express your concerns, the more receptive and open the other person will be to hearing you out.

3. Use ‘I’ statements
When talking to someone about their gambling behaviours, it might be helpful to focus on your concerns and your worries, rather than focusing in too much detail on what the other person is
doing or what they have done.

4. Focus on your main point
t can be really tempting - in a heated conversation when emotions are running high - to discuss other things that cause you concern or make you feel stressed. Often, that just becomes a distraction from the main point that you want to get across - in this case, concerns about gambling.

5. Think small steps
It may feel too difficult for the other person to imagine giving up gambling forever. So, it can help to think about small steps towards the longer-term goal. One step might be encouraging your loved one to get a neutral person's opinion on whether they need help with gambling behaviours - perhaps one of AnonyMind's professional clinicians.

6. Get more help
Gambling.AnonyMind.com is a secure website offering free access to self-help, assessment, and confidential online appointments with our psychologists or psychotherapists.

Worried about a young person's gambling?
