It’s common to see references to the basic human instincts of ‘fight or flight’ when faced with a traumatic situation.

In fact, the brain is hardwired to deliver a wider range of reactions, which can be summed up as fight, flight, freeze, fawn and flop. The latter two being the least discussed and talked about.

These are natural reactions triggered by part of our brain. In fact, we share this instinctive behaviour with other animal life! Any creature responds quickly to potential danger by fighting back, running or becoming totally still. Or, to diffuse danger they form a closer attachment to their aggressor (fawn).

Fight, flight, freeze, fawn, flop and other 'symptoms' such as urgency are a natural outcome of fearful situations or extended periods of trauma. With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or C-PTSD, they can leave a lasting legacy and become a recurrent behaviour.

Find out more about trauma responses, and what they may 'look like' on our website here: https://www.ptsduk.org/its-so-much-more-than-just-fight-or-flight/

One option for breathwork to help ease trauma response is Alternate Nostril Breathing which you can find out more about here https://www.ptsduk.org/yogic-breathing-to-reduce-ptsd-anxiety/

The Birth Trauma Association wristband gives a clear and visible directive to health care providers to provide trauma informed care at your appointments, and during any scans or treatments.

This wristband can be worn simply to raise awareness of birth trauma, or to all hospital appointments and during your birth.  The red and white colours, along with the Birth Trauma Association name and logo will either immediately alert staff, or can be used to trigger a conversation about your requirement for trauma informed care.

We understand it can be difficult to explain your needs to staff, so we hope this wristband will help make things easier, notifying Health Care Professionals that you might need a little more time, and reiterating the importance of gaining your trust whilst working collaboratively with you as the patient.

Because I've wanted to repost this for a couple weeks now. To the mama who needs to hear this tonight.

Reposted from @3:23 Photography & Birth Services

To the woman who read the books, took the classes, put her body into every bendable spinning position babies position there is, moved and swayed, planned and prayed. I know when you see the posts of women who hummed their babies earth side in hours, in a warm tub, looking blissful, it feels laughable. Not for you. It didn’t happen for you. To the woman who lays in postpartum, aching from her cesarean, listening to the woman in the room next to you roaring her child into her arms, sounds of birth followed by a fresh baby cry, but not for you. It’s important to remember we follow the labor that our body allows. Do I attend primarily natural births? I sure do. Have you ever looked into the face of a woman, sweat on her brow, pleading for her baby to rotate its head just right? Hours of non stop contractions, no break. Exhaustion. Every labor is not the same. In a world where I feel SO passionately about a birth plan, doulas and midwifery, I feel just as much passion for the women who simply gave it everything. Every bit of their being.

Birth is not always bliss. With the right tools and listening to our bodies can we make it that way MOST of the time? Yes. To speak on medicinal help in times of dire exhaustion or life threatening emergencies is simply ignorant. You won’t find it here. If the situation wasn’t what you wanted it to be, it’s okay to grieve it. Don’t hold yourself to the standard of an “uneventful” labor and feel that you failed. You didn’t. I promise you didn’t.
