💛 Self Harm Awareness Day – Sunday 1 March

Theme 2026: Connection is Coping – Finding Support Together
Self-harm can affect anyone. For many, it is a way of coping with overwhelming emotions or experiences. Today aims to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and remind everyone that support is available.

✨ Self-harm is not something to be ashamed of.
It’s a sign that someone is struggling, not a sign of weakness.

“Connection is Coping” – What We Can All Do
✔️ Reach in – check on those you care about
✔️ Reach out – talk to someone you trust
✔️ Remember – no one has to struggle alone

Signs Someone May Need Support
• Feeling self-harm is the only coping method
• Hiding injuries or feeling ashamed
• Increasing risk-taking or injury
• Anxiety, low mood, or overwhelming thoughts

Healthy Coping Alternatives
• Talking to someone you trust
• Creative outlets – art, writing, music
• Physical movement / sport
• Going for a walk or changing environment
• Connecting with safe, supportive people
• Stress-relief tools – journaling, holding an ice cube

Supporting a child who may be self-harming can be frightening, but you are not alone.

Signs a Child May Be Self-Harming
• Unexplained cuts, burns, or bruises
• Avoiding situations where their body is visible
• Missing sharp objects / bloodstained tissues
• Withdrawal from friends or family
• Low mood, hopelessness, self-blame

How Parents Can Help
• Have gentle conversations during calm moments
• Ask how they’re feeling and what’s worrying them
• Reassure them of your love and lack of judgement
• Encourage talking or writing things down
• Explore safer coping strategies together
• Support gradual change — recovery isn’t linear

If Distress Escalates
• Use grounding techniques (ice cube, breathing, 5 4 3 2 1)
• Reduce access to items used for self-harm
• Seek help from a GP or CAMHS if concerns increase

If you're thinking about change during Ramadan, here are some safer steps to consider:
✔ Avoid stopping suddenly if you use regularly — withdrawal can be unsafe.
✔ Talk to someone first if you're wanting to reduce or pause your use.
✔ Stay hydrated and eat well when you break your fast.
✔ Keep naloxone nearby if opioids are part of your use.
✔ Reach out confidentially if you’re unsure what’s safe for you.
Choosing to stay safe and look after yourself fits fully with the spirit of Ramadan.
