When a loved one with dementia has to move into a care home, it’s common to experience feelings of guilt, even when we know it’s the right decision to keep them safe and cared for.
We asked members of our community to share their advice. Here’s what they had to say:
‘Guilt for placing your loved one into a home is normal and very common. All I can say is the hurt does get less’
‘Don’t be ashamed of allowing relief as well. It’s a melting pot but you matter too’
‘I felt so guilty, like I was taking away Mum’s freedom, but kept reminding myself she was safer in a home after she went missing in London for 7 hours’
‘It’s a hard decision to make, but I think you are putting them first - it is for their care and safety’
‘I’ve realised that the care home was the kindest thing I could do for my wife. On your own, you cannot cope with dementia. I wanted to but, in the end, I was wrung out’
‘When I feel guilt, I remind myself that Nana always said “I've had a good life, you have to live yours” and that she is safer in the home’
