Today is World Radiotherapy Awareness Day and we’re raising awareness of this vital cancer treatment. Over 50% of people diagnosed with cancer will benefit from radiotherapy at some point in their care plan.

Across HCA UK we’re very proud to offer a broad range of specialist treatment techniques on a number of different radiotherapy machines. This helps us to provide personalised and targeted treatment plans for every patient. We couldn’t do it without the dedication of our skilled radiotherapy teams, from our physicists and dosimetrists to our therapeutic radiographers, nurses, consultant colleagues and admin support teams.

Every 14 minutes someone in the UK is told they have blood cancer, making it the 5th most common cancer. But could you spot the signs and symptoms?

“He asked me ‘can you see me?’ and I could, out of both eyes!”

When Katie’s vision began to blur, she assumed it was her glasses. “I play netball, and I was just barging into people – I had no peripheral vision at all,” she recalls.

Tests revealed the cause: a tumour pressing on her optic nerve. Understandably, Katie was concerned about what this might mean for her sight and her future.

With the reassurance and expertise of Mr Sinan Barazi, Consultant Neurosurgeon at The Harley Street Clinic, Katie had minimally invasive surgery to remove the tumour.

The surgery had been a great success – Mr Barazi was able to remove the entire tumour, and Katie’s vision was not only preserved, but restored.

Katie’s story is a powerful example of how advanced surgical techniques and world-class clinical expertise at HCA UK can change lives.

✨ We were honoured to welcome Duncan Burton, Chief Nursing Officer for England, and Karen Bonner MBE, NHS England’s Regional Chief Nurse for London, on their first official visit to a HCA Healthcare UK facility.
 
As part of their visit today to HCA UK Private Care at Guy’s and London Bridge Hospital, Duncan and Karen met with senior nursing leaders from across HCA UK, heard about our commitment to nursing excellence, and presented a prestigious Chief Nursing Officer for England Silver Award to one of our outstanding colleagues, Liliana Branco, Palliative Care CNS at The Harley Street Clinic.
 
The CNO for England Silver Award is presented to nurses who go above and beyond in their practice, leadership, and contribution to the profession, and we are incredibly proud that one of our colleagues has been recognised in this way. 🏅💙

"The most meaningful thing was meeting people I could connect with…I could say how I really felt - which was often that cancer felt very unfair. It allowed me to get everything out that was inside me. From that point of view, I think it's probably the time where I felt most listened to."

📣 Medical First 📣 We’re the first independent healthcare provider to offer breakthrough bispecific antibody therapy for people with lung cancer.

Bispecific antibody therapy, also known as bispecific T-cell engager therapy, is a groundbreaking type of immunotherapy treatment that uses specially manufactured antibodies to engage T-cells so they can target cancer cells. We’ve previously used this treatment to treat blood cancers, but this is the first time it’s being used to treat solid tumours, specifically people living with extensive stage small cell lung cancer.

The treatment is available across our network of Leaders in Oncology Care sites, with the first patient treated at The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham.

Dr Shobhit Baijal, Consultant Medical Oncologist says: “This milestone represents a significant breakthrough in our ability to treat patients with extensive stage small cell lung cancer and we’re proud to have treated HCA UK’s first patient here at The Harborne Hospital. This bispecific T-cell engager therapy represents the next generation of immunotherapy, building on the success of monoclonal antibodies and harnessing the natural defences of the immune system in a more targeted way than ever before.”
