“As a breast cancer surgeon and a woman, October is always a deeply reflective month for me. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not just a campaign. It is a powerful reminder of how important it is for us to know our bodies and to prioritise our health.”

This October we hear from Professor Amtul Carmichael an experienced Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, as she shares her advice on how to check your breasts regularly and why it’s so important to check your underarms too.

Twenty years ago, Leaders in Oncology Care started with a single centre in London. Today, we've grown into a network of several centres across London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Fifteen years ago, we opened our first site outside of London in Manchester, through a partnership between one of Europe’s leading cancer centres - The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and HCA Healthcare UK, bringing together world-leading expertise with a patient-centred approach to care. And most recently, we've expanded to The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham.

As we mark our milestone 20th anniversary, Dr Vivek Misra, Consultant Clinical Oncologist The Christie Private Care, part of HCA Healthcare UK, explains how this geographical growth means more people can access the same level of expertise and exceptional care, across the UK.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in a live panel hosted by HCA Healthcare UK and Feel Good, Jill Williams - Organisational Psychologist, Dr Robyn Cohen - General Practitioner, and Miss Joanna Franks - Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon at HCA Healthcare UK, led an important discussion about breast cancer incidence, symptoms and the vital importance of early detection.

🎥 In this clip, Joanna explains why knowing what's normal for your body is so important - and why seeking advice quickly when something changes could make all the difference.

Early diagnosis cannot only improves outcomes, but can also provide reassurance when symptoms are harmless or benign. Don't wait - if you notice any changes, get them checked without delay.

Twenty years ago a group of cancer experts had a vision. They wanted to provide cancer care that was both world-class and genuinely personal. Today, that vision has grown into the Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC) network, providing truly personalised cancer care to patients across London, Manchester and Birmingham.

“We decided to start and set up the LOC 20 years ago with the intention of providing, firstly the best quality cancer care available anywhere in the world, but also to focus intensely on the patient experience. Over the past 20 years, the treatment of cancer has improved dramatically, but the actual way people are cared for in the LOC has changed very little. The initial philosophy has been maintained throughout, and we are very grateful for that.” – Dr Maurice Slevin, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Co-founder of the LOC

📽️ Watch our video to hear from our team of experts on how LOC has delivered exceptional cancer care for over two decades, while never losing sight of what matters most – our patients.

This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the voices and experiences of colleagues that make our community stronger.

📽️ Watch here as they reflect and share their thoughts, experiences and hopes; from what Black History Month means to them, to why it’s important to recognise black history at HCA UK. Their voices remind us that celebrating black history is about more than learning from the past, it’s about embracing the present and taking action to create a fairer future.

At HCA UK we’re proud to recognise and celebrate our colleagues, not only their achievements, but their heritage and cultures.

This year marks a special milestone as we celebrate 20 years of Leaders in Oncology Care (LOC).

LOC was founded two decades ago by four oncologists who set up The LOC with the intention of providing the best quality cancer care available anywhere in the world, in an environment where patients and their families feel safe, supported and genuinely cared for; a practice that is now the gold standard in cancer care.

Since partnering with HCA Healthcare UK, LOC has expanded to become a network of seven centres in London, Manchester and Birmingham. Whilst the treatment we provide has progressed dramatically over the last 20 years, the founding vision to provide truly personalised care, that puts patients at the heart of every decision, remains the same.

John Reay, President & CEO of HCA Healthcare UK says: “I feel very proud of LOC’s role in setting the standard for specialist oncology services in the private sector. Since 2005, LOC has built an exceptional reputation for its multidisciplinary approach and patient-centred ethos. As part of HCA Healthcare UK, our LOC sites continue to play a vital role in delivering world-leading care and advancing cancer treatment for the future.”

A huge thank you to our incredible teams. This level of exceptional care is made possible by your dedication to go above and beyond, supporting patients and their loved ones as they navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“Our mental health impacts our ability to cope with the everyday issues we face, so it’s important that we prioritise good mental health and can discuss it openly and without stigma. I’m really pleased to see our MHFA programme expand, especially as the role of a mental health first aider aligns so well with our colleague promise of compassion. It is a wonderful example of colleagues supporting colleagues.” - Darren Dear, HR Director, Corporate and Medical Services and Group Wellbeing Lead

At HCA UK we are so proud of all the work we do to support our colleague’s mental health. We launched our Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) programme in 2022 and have trained over 550 managers for Mental Health Skills training so far.
