Whether you’re off on a beach holiday, city break, or an adventure trip, looking after your health can make all the difference. Here are a few top tips from Dr Rhodes!
🧳 Pack your medications (and extras!)
Bring enough of your regular medication to last the whole trip - plus a few days extra in case of delays. Keep them in your hand luggage and in their original packaging.
📝 Carry a copy of your repeat prescription
A printed summary - or access via the NHS app - can be really helpful if you need to prove your medication abroad.
💧 Stay hydrated and be heat-smart
Drink plenty of water, avoid the midday sun, and use sunscreen. Oral rehydration sachets are a good idea for hotter climates.
💊 Travel health essentials
Pack a small kit with paracetamol or ibuprofen, antihistamines, plasters, insect repellent, anti-diarrhoea tablets, and sunscreen.
🦟 Vaccines or malaria tablets?
Check in advance if your destination requires any travel vaccines or malaria prevention. Visit www.travelhealthpro.org.uk or speak to a travel clinic - ideally 6-8 weeks before departure.
🚑 What if you get ill while abroad?
Healthcare systems vary around the world. Always have travel insurance, and carry your GHIC card and emergency contact numbers.
⚠️ Important: UK GPs are NOT licensed to provide medical advice or prescriptions while you're overseas. If you become unwell, please seek help locally from a doctor, pharmacist, or emergency services.
🌐 When you get home
Still feeling unwell after your trip? Let us know - especially if you've had diarrhoea, a fever, or other ongoing symptoms. Don’t forget to mention your travel history.
