Accessibility Unwrapped | Learn With ESS 💚💙🧡

“I carry this ramp everywhere I go because the world still throws stairs at me but this ramp is my freedom.”

Most people never think twice about a single step outside a café, a raised curb, or a doorway that sits just a little too high. But for many wheelchair users, that “small step” becomes a full barrier. A moment of exclusion. A reminder that accessible design still isn’t a universal priority.

So I travel with my portable ramp.
Not because it’s convenient, it isn’t.
Not because I should have to, I shouldn’t.
But because too many spaces still aren’t built with people like me in mind.

At Learn With ESS, stories like this sit at the heart of what we do. Accessibility isn’t just a topic, it’s lived experience. And this ramp represents something the built environment often takes away: freedom, independence, and dignity.

It allows me to enter places confidently, without waiting, without asking, and without relying on someone to remember to make the space accessible. In its own way, it’s dignity in aluminium.

Accessibility is not a favour.
It’s not a special request.
It’s a basic right.

And you truly understand that when you meet someone who has to carry their own access with them.

That’s why Accessibility Unwrapped matters — to highlight the everyday realities behind the word inclusion, and to remind us all that accessibility starts long before someone arrives at the door.

Deep Dive December | Learn With ESS

We’re excited to launch Deep Dive December, a month dedicated to shining a brighter light on the world of accessibility, disability, and inclusion.

This December, we’ll be sharing daily content that brings you closer to the people, stories, technologies, challenges, and breakthroughs that sit at the heart of what we do at Learn With ESS. Our aim is simple: to educate, raise awareness, and celebrate the lived experiences that often go unheard.

Across the month, we’ll be exploring:
🔹 Personal stories from our ambassadors and their journeys
🔹 Everyday technologies that support independence
🔹 Real challenges people face navigating the world
🔹 Businesses leading the way in accessible practice
🔹 Misconceptions and conversations that need to be heard
🔹 Practical insights, reflections, and lived experience

This is a chance to go deeper, learn something new, and see the world through different perspectives.

Most importantly, this month is all for you — our online community. We’re looking forward to connecting, sharing, and continuing the conversation together.

Deep Dive December starts now. Stay tuned.

Throwback Thursday 💚💙🧡 | Learning in Action

Throwing it back to when Nick Shepherd and the GM Business Growth Hub team took part in a LearnWithESS practical workshop.

Using blindfolds and sighted guiding, the team experienced what it’s like to navigate the world without sight — where every step, turn, and instruction matters. With 95% of information coming through our eyes, even simple tasks became powerful lessons in communication, trust, and calm under pressure.

It’s amazing how many transferable skills emerge: teamwork, empathy, leadership, and decision-making.

Huge thank you to Nick and the team for getting stuck in and embracing the challenge.

Learning in Action 💚💙🧡

Recently some of the staff team at the National Football Centre, St. George’s Park, stepped into the shoes of their blind players, quite literally.

From navigating corridors with a long white cane to something as simple as finding a doorway or a seat, staff got to feel just how different everyday tasks can be when you remove one sense and rely on the others.

And as you’ll see from their reactions in the video… when you put yourself fully into someone else’s world, it changes how you see your own.

Massive credit to St. George’s Park for embracing this kind of learning. These moments build empathy, awareness, and ultimately better support for everyone who uses their facilities.

Here’s to more conversations, more understanding, and more inclusive environments across the game.

Unscripted with ESS — celebrating the people, not just the projects.

This week’s little joys:
Zara is back on the court, smiling and winning, a comeback worth cheering for.
Hammas is home with family, soaking in love and warm congratulations after his journey to Makkah.
Azeem is enjoying slow mornings with his new coffee machine, the simple joy of a perfect brew.

Each moment is a reminder that behind every session and project is a life filled with joy, growth and meaning. 🌟

The Future of Inclusive Healthcare.đź‘‚

Another brilliant group from the University of Manchester’s STP Audiology Programme has completed our three-part disability awareness series and what a pleasure it’s been working with them!

Over the semester, students have:
Heard directly from individuals with lived experience of disability and inclusion.
Gained hands-on understanding through Braille and British Sign Language sessions.
Explored assistive technologies, from cochlear implants and AI glasses to accessible mobility vehicles.

These future audiologists have shown such enthusiasm, empathy, and a genuine commitment to inclusion in healthcare.

A big thank you to the University of Manchester for making this collaboration possible, we’re looking forward to continuing to build on this partnership and embedding inclusion into clinical education for years to come.

Exciting news! ✨

We’re super excited to be heading back to Carrs Pasties in Bolton next week!

Our next round of disability awareness workshops will give the Carrs team the chance to explore how customers with different disabilities, impairments, or challenges might navigate their stores, from using blindfolds and white canes to understanding how small changes can make a big difference.

We absolutely love working with the Carrs Pasties family, their commitment to inclusion, empathy, and learning always shines through. 🌟

Can’t wait to get started again, see you next Wednesday! 🙌

Breaking Barriers in Audiology!

Over the past semester, we’ve had the pleasure of working with trainee clinical scientists from the University of Manchester’s STP Audiology Programme and what an incredible journey it’s been!

Across three workshops, the students immersed themselves in a wide range of experiences designed to build empathy, understanding, and practical awareness:
Exploring life without sight, sound, or mobility through lived experience activities.
Taking part in Braille and British Sign Language masterclasses to understand the basics and their real-world application.
Discovering assistive technologies such as cochlear implants, mobility vans, and AI-powered smart glasses.

The curiosity, engagement, and openness shown by this group have been fantastic to see. This marks our first delivery of the programme — and we’re excited to continue refining and growing it in the future.

A huge thank you to the University of Manchester for the collaboration and support throughout. Here’s to developing the next generation of inclusive healthcare professionals.
