Mental Health and Wellbeing
ACTION is key
For years there has been a lot of talk about mental health provision and solutions in the corporate world (and everywhere else for that matter).
It may be good to talk about it, but there is still too much talk and too much box-ticking going on and not enough practical action.
How many courses do you need to go on to 'recognise the signs' of mental health issues?
How many studies do we need to do before we actually decide to do something about the issue- and look at the root cause of the extraordinary levels of anxiety and depression in society right now?
I've always been about the practical solutions- and as a result my one to one clients and people I work with in groups often experience transformations in their wellbeing incredibly quickly.
I believe for any company looking to help the mental health and wellbeing of its employees, there should be a number of key questions asked:
1. Why are levels of stress, anxiety and depression so high amongst our employees?
2. What can we do to help our employees release stress and anxiety and build resilience?
3. What PRACTICAL tools and training can we provide that allows our employees to know they have some level of control over their emotions, while also giving them the ability to self-regulate and actually release stress and anxiety rapidly?
These questions are not answered by Mental Health First Aid- which I have trained in myself.
My approach to company wellbeing is based on three main pillars:
1. Provide new perspectives/insights on mental health and wellbeing that inspire and allow people to see their issues differently and also to understand what may be fuelling their challenges.
2. Provide practical tools, techniques and suggested routines that allow people to feel a difference right away. Tools and techniques that can be used for life and provide a sense of control and allow them to believe that the problems are not insurmountable.
3. Influence the culture of a company or organisation to encourage openness and for these innovative techniques to be used openly and actively encouraged within the work environment.
The time has come for action- not more talking and studying.
It's important for companies to look outside the box and the safety of familiar structures (that are often not effective) and embrace the new and innovative.
