Silicone Scar Tape & Gel — A Key to Better Cosmetic Surgery Scars
Scarring is a natural part of healing, but how a scar looks later depends on many factors. One simple, evidence-based tool we routinely recommend is medical-grade silicone, available in tape, gel sheeting or topical gel form.
When used correctly, silicone helps by keeping the scar hydrated, reducing excess collagen formation, and softening redness or texture. It can also ease itchiness, tightness or discomfort.
We typically advise starting silicone once the wound is fully closed (usually 10–14 days after surgery) and wearing it continuously (12–24 hours daily) for at least 8–12 weeks — and longer for high-risk scars.
At Reza Nassab Plastic Surgery (Manchester & Cheshire), we integrate silicone scar management into our postoperative plans for breast, facial, body or reconstructive surgery. If your scar is still raised, red or uncomfortable after months, we can explore additional treatments.
