Approximately 59,000 people die each year from rabies, a deadly viral disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals πŸ¦ πŸ•πŸ¦‡. It is rare but almost always fatal once symptoms appear ⚠️.

It remains a serious risk for travellers to parts of Africa, Asia, and South and Central America, including India, Morocco, Thailand, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia. A recent and tragic case in the UK, where a woman died after being scratched by a stray puppy in Morocco, highlights why awareness is so important.

Travellers to high-risk areas are advised to get vaccinated πŸ’‰, as it offers protection and more straightforward post-exposure treatment in the event of infection.

Anyone exposed to rabies should wash the wound with soap and water and immediately seek medical attention for vaccinations and potentially rabies immunoglobulin. If symptoms haven't presented themselves, it's never too late to seek advice following an exposure to the rabies virus. Rabies deaths are preventable with timely post-exposure treatment.

If you're heading soon to a region at risk of rabies, consider seeing a travel health specialist to discuss your plans and any vaccinations you may need for your trip 🌍✈️.

✈️ The Czech Republic is experiencing a sharp rise in hepatitis A cases this year πŸ‡¨πŸ‡Ώ, with 450 confirmed cases and six deaths reported as of 5 May 2025. For comparison, 636 cases and two deaths were recorded for the whole of 2024. The outbreak is mainly affecting Prague and Central Bohemia, and UK travellers are being urged to take precautions. Rising case numbers in Austria πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή and Hungary πŸ‡πŸ‡Ί suggest a wider trend across parts of Europe.

🩺 TravelHealthPro – a website set up by the UK Department of Health – recommends that travellers to the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries take hepatitis A precautions seriously.

Unvaccinated travellers, especially those staying with friends or relatives in rural areas, eating street food, or visiting areas with poor sanitation, are most at risk.

Travellers are strongly advised to get vaccinated πŸ’‰ and take extra care with hygiene and food safety. Hepatitis A spreads through contaminated food, water, and close contact β€” and it’s preventable.

βœ”οΈ Protect yourself:
β€’ Get vaccinated at least 2 weeks before travel
β€’ Practise good hand hygiene 🧼
β€’ Avoid uncooked or unpeeled food πŸ₯—
β€’ Follow safer s*x guidance πŸ›‘οΈ

Heading abroad soon? Make sure to check your vaccine history and consult with your GP or a travel health specialist before you travel.

Stay informed and travel safe with MASTA in partnership with Nomad.
